Retired Metropolitan Police Officer Michael Fanone criticized House Republicans who introduced and signed the resolution, which says that Trump did not engage in insurrection.
Inside the resolution
The resolution was first announced in late January. Matt Gaetz, a Florida Republican, and Elise Stefanik, a Republican from NYC, along with at least 65 House Republicans, introduced it on February 6. It states that former President Trump “did not engage in insurrection or rebellion against the United States.”
Gaetz at the press conference
Gaetz told reporters, “We are here today to authoritatively express that President Trump did not commit an insurrection, and we believe Congress has a unique role in making that declaration,” adding that it is time for all House and Senate GOP to “show where they stand on this question.”
JD Vance introduced the same resolution in the Senate
Ohio Senator JD Vance revealed the bill in the Senate, saying, “From the President on down, Democrats are abusing our judicial system to disenfranchise millions of Americans and take Donald Trump off the ballot.”
Fanone issued a statement
The retired officer, who was severely injured during the January 6 riots, stated via the anti-extremist group Courage for America, “This resolution is a slap in the face to those of us who almost lost everything defending the Capitol on January 6, including protecting some of the very Members of Congress who are now attempting to rewrite history to exonerate former President Trump.”
The officer on “MAGA ideology”
“But no piece of paper signed by a group of spineless extremists will ever change the facts about that dark day: the insurrection was violent, it was deadly, and it will happen again if we do not expunge the MAGA ideology that stoked the flames of insurrection in the first place,” the statement continued,
More Republicans spoke in favor of the resolution
Cory Mills, a Florida Republican, said, “The bottom line is President Trump is not an insurrectionist, nor did he incite an insurrection.” He continued, “This narrative is simply a political distraction from the Biden Admin’s failures, spanning a crippling economy, record inflation, foreign policy blunders, to his disastrous handling of the border.”
The retired officer received threats
In July 2021, Fanone revealed a vulgar message that, in part, said that the rioters should have “killed all you scumbags.” The male voice asked the officer; he could “slap you up beside your head with a backhand and knock you out” and continued using expletives.
Suspicious timing
The minute-long threat message came at the time Fanone gave an opening statement, telling the committee, “What makes the struggle harder and more painful is to know so many of my fellow citizens, including so many of the people I put my life at risk to defend, are downplaying or outright denying what happened.”
The officer’s passionate speech
Fanone continued, “I feel like I went to hell and back to protect them and the people in this room, but too many are now telling me that hell doesn’t exist — or that hell actually wasn’t that bad.”
Fanone’s fight
In a letter from 2021, obtained initially by CBS, Fanone wrote, “I struggle daily with the emotional anxiety of having survived such a traumatic event, but I also struggle with the anxiety of hearing those who continue to downplay the events of that day and those who would ignore them altogether with their lack of acknowledgment.”
Hold The Line
Fanone answered a call for backup and ended with a brain injury and a heart attack. One time, Donald Trump’s voter wrote a book, “Hold The Line,” which became an instant best-seller. Fanone and his family, including his parents and ex-wife, faced harassment by extremists, which the FBI investigated.
Fanone and veterans urged the House to condemn the violence
On the second anniversary of the January 6 attack, Fanonone presented a letter signed by over 1000 military veterans and active duty members. Fanone’s letter was addressed to Marjorie Taylor Greene’s office. The letter urged House Republicans to condemn the violence and “promise to hold members of your conference accountable for endorsing violence or espousing violent rhetoric towards those who disagree with them politically.”
