An Oakland County Republican lawmaker, Josh Schriver, was stripped of his office staff, budget, and committee assignment after sharing a racist post that involved a conspiracy theory.

House Speaker Joe Tate, a Democrat, said that there is no place for “racist, hateful and bigoted speech.” He added, “Representative Schriver has a history of promoting debunked theories and dangerous rhetoric that jeopardizes the safety of Michigan residents and contributes to a hostile and uncomfortable environment for others.”

Michigan’s first Black speaker, Tate, shared in his statement, “The House of Representatives is the people’s House, and all Michiganders should look upon this body and take pride in how we conduct ourselves. It is also a workplace, and I have a responsibility to make sure the employees of the House feel safe and secure.”

The lawmaker told The Detroit News that he opposes “racists, race baiters and victim politics.” However, he added, “What I find strange is the agenda to demoralize and reduce the white portion of our population. That’s not inclusive, and Christ is inclusive!”

Then he turned to Tucker Carlson

Schriver added he was “glad” that Tucker Carlson and Jack Posobiec are sharing his link “so I can continue my research on these issues.” Great Replacement is a far-right conspiracy that claims there is a plot to decrease the influence of White people. It is aimed at Black, Brown, and Jewish people.

During the Charlottesville rally that turned deadly, white nationalists were chanting, “You will not replace us!” and “Jews will not replace us!” According to AP’s polling from 2022, 1 in 3 Americans believe there’s a scheme to replace “traditional” Americans with migrants.

An 18-year-old White male shot and killed 10, all Black people, and wounded three more in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Buffalo, NY. The teenager described himself as a fascist, a White supremacist, and an anti-Semite and said that most of his beliefs come from the Internet. A 180-page manifesto thought to be posted online by the shooter described his desire to “kill as many Blacks as possible” and his trust in the “great replacement theory.”

Governor Gretchen issued a statement

The Governor, a Democrat, wrote on the official website, “The abhorrent rhetoric pushed by a member of the Michigan House of Representatives goes against our state and national values.” Whitmer shared that Michigan’s history is “defined by generations of families from around the world” and mentioned “Dutch communities,  Arab Americans, and Black Americans” who fled from the South.

Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist joined the Governor and stated, “Racism is dark, dangerous, and disgraceful. Rep. Schriver’s pedaling of the racist ‘replacement theory’ is a deplorable demonstration of his fear of a dynamic and diverse Michigan future where all of our people in every community can succeed.”

Lieutenant Governor added, “What is equally as abhorrent is the fact that this rhetoric has not been condemned in any serious way by Rep. Schriver’s Republican Party counterparts. The silence is deafening.”

Matt Maddock of Milford, a Republican, said that Schiriver is a “great man without a racist bone in his body.” He added, “Josh Schriver could have gerrymandered a dozen Black Dems out of office and been praised.”

Maddock called the whole thing “obscene”

The lawmaker continued, “Instead, he retweeted a meme, and he’s a pariah. This is all just left-wing passion plays to hang the scarlet ‘R’ around Josh. It’s obscene.” Though most did not say anything, some stood against Schiriver.

More Republicans condemned the lawmaker

Donni Steele, a Republican lawmaker, said, “Hateful rhetoric goes against everything I believe and distracts from the positive work we’re trying to accomplish for the people of Michigan.”

John Damoose, a GOP Senator, wrote, “Such ideas truly have no place in our politics or our culture,” adding, “We Republicans should know that anything other than a swift and strong rebuke of such filth undermines everything we say, everything we believe and everything we are trying to accomplish in terms of rebuilding the ‘shining city on a hill’ to which we point so often.”
