Proposed Legislation in New York to Classify Traffic Blockades as “Domestic Terrorism” Amid Protests

Protestors obstructing roadways in New York may now confront felony charges for participating in the act of “domestic terrorism,” as per a newly introduced state legislation.

The bill, brought forward by Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato of Queens, emerges in the wake of numerous disruptive anti-Israel protests that have caused major traffic disruptions, including on the Brooklyn Bridge and the Holland Tunnel.

Balancing Protest Rights

According to documents supporting the bill, while the right to protest is acknowledged, actions that instill fear and panic and endanger lives are not permissible.

Unacceptable Disruptions

Amato, in a statement, said, “When those who protest directly hinder the ability for pedestrians and motorists to freely move, impacting their ability to arrive at a location, or seek aid, that is unacceptable.”

Dangerous Actions

“The purposeful blocking of bridges, tunnels and roadways which results in cars being stopped, sick people not being able to get medical attention, or any attempt to prevent innocent people from getting from Point A to Point B is not appropriate or fair – in fact it is flat out dangerous,” she added.

Felony Charges

Upcoming Election

This legislative effort comes as Assemblywoman Amato prepares to contend against Republican Tom Sullivan in an upcoming election following a narrowly won previous race.

Courting Conservative Base

Observers speculate that the bill could be a strategic move to appeal to a constituency with growing conservative leanings.

Skeptical Voices

Councilwoman Joann Ariola of Queens expressed cautious optimism about the bill’s intentions but questioned its substance and potential efficacy, hinting at concerns over whether it may serve more as a symbolic gesture than a practical solution.

Limited Support

So far, the bill has attracted minimal legislative backing, with Assemblyman Sam Berger of Queens, who is also a Democrat, being the sole co-sponsor.

Broader Legislative Efforts

The bill is part of a broader wave of legislative proposals responding to an uptick in anti-Israel protests and antisemitic incidents following attacks by Hamas on October 7.

The ministry suggests that the actual death toll might be higher, as thousands of additional Palestinians are suspected to be trapped under debris in Gaza, as reported by Reuters.
