Prominent RNC Member Seeks to Protect the Party From Paying Trump’s Legal Bills

The Republican National Committee member Henry Barbour is working on slowing down former president Trump’s reported attempts to take over and use it to pay his hefty legal fees.

The long-time RNC member from Mississippi is working on banning the national party from coordinating with Trump or fundraising with the Trump campaign until he officially wins the nomination. He presented two resolutions.

According to NBC, the draft resolution, in part, says: “The Republican National Committee and its leadership will stay neutral throughout the Presidential primary and not take on additional staff from any of the active Presidential campaigns until a nominee is clearly determined by reaching 1,215 delegates.”

Despite losing her home state, Nikki Haley told reporters, “Some of you—perhaps a few of you in the media—came here today to see if I’m dropping out of the race. Well, I’m not. Far from it.” She added, “I’m campaigning every day until the last person votes because I believe in a better America and a brighter future for our kids.”

“I would hope that the people in the RNC know that they have a responsibility, a responsibility to put in people in the RNC who are going to look out in the best interest of all of the Republican Party, not just one person,” the former South Carolina Governor said.

The former president said he planned to install senior adviser Chris LaCivita as chief operating officer of the RNC. The second in command, a co-chair of the RNC, would be his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump. Trump also endorsed Michael Whatley to lead the RNC, claiming he “has been with me from the beginning, has done a great job in his home state of North Carolina.”

The Trump campaign disapproves of Barbour’s resolution, with Chris LaCivitia stating, “Efforts to delay that assist Joe Biden in the destruction of our nation. Republicans cannot stand on the sidelines and allow this to happen.”

Following the endorsement, Eric Trump’s wife said, “Every single penny will go to the number one and the only job of the RNC — that is electing Donald J. Trump as president of the United States and saving this country.”

The RNC ended 2023 with its lowest fundraising totals in a decade. The current chair, Ronna McDaniel, reportedly announced she would soon step down. Many allege a fallout between McDaniel and Trump, who said in early February, “I think she did great when she ran Michigan for me; I think she did OK initially in the RNC. I would say right now there will probably be some changes made.”

Barbour commented, “The RNC has one job. That’s winning elections,” adding, “I believe RNC funds should be spent solely on winning elections, on political expenses, not legal bills.” The Republican has a second resolution drafted that directly targets legal bills.

If it passes, the resolution will declare, “The Republican National Committee will not pay the legal bills of any of our candidates for any federal or state office but will focus our spending on efforts directly related to the 2024 election cycle.”

Talking to CNN, Barbour said, “I think the Trump campaign has jumped the gun on taking over the RNC before it has the requisite delegates,” adding, “I just think it’s important that we stand up and follow the rules.”

According to ABC News, the RNC was already paying for some of Trump’s legal fees in New York cases, which began while he was still in the White House. According to Federal Election Commission records, Trump’s political action committees spent over $50 million of donors’ money on legal expenses in 2023.
