New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu poked fun at the size of Trump’s rally in the Granite State ahead of the primaries. Sununu, who is not running for reelection, is a Republican who does not support Trump and enjoys popularity in his home state.
Sununu is Team Haley
The Governor of New Hampshire endorsed Trump’s only challenger after DeSantis’ abrupt exit. During his interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Sununu said that Haley does not have to win, but “the fact that it can happen at all [is significant].”
New Hampshire Governor Talks About Trump’s Rally
Speaking to Kristen Welker, Sununu discussed the crowds at Trump’s rally in Manchester. The Governor said, “It wasn’t even that big of a rally. The guy had to curtain off half of the stadium, so it didn’t look empty, and then flies out of here.”
Haley Got to Double Digits
Sununu also praised the former South Carolina governor and ambassador in the Trump administration, saying, “Nobody goes from single digits in December to you absolutely have to win in January.” Trump held 50 percent of votes in the primaries, while Haley had 39 percent, CNN polling reported.
South Carolina is a Month Away
When faced with Haley’s slipping numbers in her home state, Sununu said, “[I’m not] even looking at that right now,” adding, “It’s really a month away.”
Trump and Sununu Have a History
The four-term Governor of New Hampshire and the former president have a long history of verbal attacks. In December, Trump ridiculed Sununu’s numbers, to which the Governor answered, “One of us has never lost an election.” Sununu enjoyed over 60 percent approval in one August poll.
Trump’s Immunity Claims
Talking to Welker, Sununu also expressed concerns over Trump’s immunity claims. At the same rally in Manchester, the 45th president said, “You’re going to have to allow a president — any president — to have immunity so that that President can act and do what he feels.” Sununu responded, “He was dead serious. He wasn’t even making one of his ridiculous jokes.”
Was Sununu Right About the Trump Rally?
While the Republican Governor’s comments were met with approval by those not supporting Trump, Clare Lopez, board member of the Citizens Commission on National Security, posted on X, “No one in America today gets this kind of enthusiasm from this size crowd as President Donald Trump does, rally after rally, all over the country.”

Elad Hakim, a conservative columnist, and lawyer, also took to X to speak about the Manchester rally, “Judging from the size of the crowd at the rally yesterday, it is safe to say that Trump still has tremendous clout! The NH primary is on Tuesday! Trump supporters must come out & vote!”
Trump Has the Support of the South Carolina Governor
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster and several other prominent Republicans from the state joined the former president during the Manchester rally, held in Southern New Hampshire University’s arena. Trump bragged, “Almost every politician from South Carolina is endorsing me.”
Sununu Also Ridiculed Another Republican
During the interview, the New Hampshire Governor was asked about Tim Scott’s endorsement of Donald Trump. Scott, a Senator from South Carolina, recently emerged as a potential Trump VP. But Sununu responded quickly and sharply: “Tim Scott doesn’t matter.”
Beating Trump in the Republican Primary
During “Meet the Press,” Governor Sununu insisted on the importance of beating Trump in the GOP primaries. His message was, “It has to happen at the ballot box. Don’t sit on your couch. Don’t wait for it to happen. Don’t wait for some external factor or court case to take over. You’ve got to get out and vote.”
Haley on “two presidential candidates in their 80s”
The GOP’s presidential hopeful held a rally in Derry, where she stated, “Seventy percent of Americans have said they don’t want to see a Donald Trump-Joe Biden rematch.” She added, “Do we really want to have two presidential candidates in their 80s?” Days before, she challenged Trump’s mental capacity following his big speech on January 6th, where he mixed her up with Nancy Pelosi.
