Oklahoma Republicans recently expressed disapproval of Sen. James Lankford’s involvement in a bipartisan border agreement.
Accusations Fly in GOP Border Dispute
According to a press release, the Oklahoma Republican Party (OKGOP) committee members passed a resolution at a Saturday meeting.
The resolution criticizes Sen. Lankford, a fellow Republican, for collaborating with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, on what it describes as “an open-border deal to allow 5,000 illegal immigrants a day to enter and work in the United States.”
Jeopardizing Rights and Safety
The resolution accuses Sen. Lankford of jeopardizing the rights of legal immigrants and the safety of Americans by being too cooperative with Democrats on border issues.
Surge in Border Crossings
The U.S.-Mexico border witnessed over 2.4 million encounters in the fiscal year 2023, an increase from about 1.7 million in 2021, according to CBP statistics. Texas Governor Greg Abbott, known for advocating stronger border control, has implemented measures including razor-wire barriers, aiming to deter illegal crossings along Texas’ extensive border with Mexico.
OKGOP Withdraws Support
The Oklahoma Republican Party’s resolution firmly condemns Senator James Lankford, urging him to stop actions they believe threaten the security and freedom of both Oklahoma and the United States. The resolution specifies that the OKGOP will withhold support for Sen. Lankford unless he stops these actions.
Holding Officials Accountable
OKGOP Vice Chairman Wayne Hill, in a statement to Newsweek, emphasized the party’s commitment to holding Republican officials accountable to their platform, which advocates for limited and legal immigration.
“It is our hope that Sen. Lankford will acknowledge the direction of the state committee and do all in his power to defend out border from the current invasion,” Hill expressed.
Responding to Criticism
In response to the resolution, Lankford affirmed on X (formerly Twitter) the critical role of border security in maintaining national security, asserting: “Border security is national security.”
Clash Over Legitimacy
Anthony Ferate, a former chair of the Oklahoma Republican Party, has disputed the legitimacy of the recent vote against Senator James Lankford.
“Today an extreme faction of the @officialOKGOP held a meeting without providing an official call to all members of the state committee, including me, to attack Sen. @jameslankford,” Ferate stated on X.
Disputing the GOP’s Decision
Ferate argues that this oversight renders any decisions made in the meeting, including the vote against Sen. Lankford, as unofficial and unrepresentative of “the voice of all Oklahoma Republicans.”
Beyond ‘Empty Promises’
In contrast, Wayne Hill, speaking to Newsweek, praised the strength and growth of Oklahoma’s grassroots movement, attributing it to their proactive approach and avoidance of “empty promises.”
Hill described Ferate as “a protector of the old guard of establishment Republicans” and “out of touch with the pulse of our OKGOP state committee membership.”
Cross-Party Border Solutions
Senator James Lankford has been collaborating with Senators Kyrsten Sinema, an independent from Arizona, and Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut, to forge a bipartisan solution addressing the surge in illegal crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Almost a Reality
According to CBS News, the senators are nearing a deal that could be revealed soon. This proposed agreement is said to grant the executive branch the power to close the border under certain high-crossing conditions.
Biden’s Border Control Statement
President Joe Biden, in a recent statement, declared his readiness to exercise this authority immediately upon the bill’s enactment. He emphasized the significance of the proposed measures, labeling them as potentially “the toughest and fairest set of reforms to secure the border we’ve ever had in our country.”.
Supreme Court Backs Biden
In a recent significant decision, the U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of the Biden administration regarding the installation of razor wire fencing along the Texas-Mexico border. The Court, with a 5-4 vote, allowed Border Patrol agents to cut the concertina wire near Eagle Pass, Texas, while the legal battle continues
Against Texas Border Wire
This wire, part of Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s broader efforts to control immigration and the unprecedented influx of migrants since President Biden took office, spans roughly 30 miles.
Federal Authority on Immigration
The Biden administration, in its court filings, contended that the wire hinders Border Patrol agents’ ability to access migrants crossing the river. Furthermore, the administration argued that federal immigration laws take precedence over Texas’ measures to curb migrant flow into the country.
