Nikki Haley says Texas can secede, “That’s their decision to make”, but it’s not going to happen

Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley said during the radio interview that if Texas decides to secede from the U.S., “they can do that.” Still, she added that it’s not going to happen.

Haley was on “The Breakfast Club” when she shared her thoughts on Texas. The GOP presidential hopeful stated, “If that whole state says, ‘We don’t want to be part of America anymore,’ I mean, that’s their decision to make.”

The state’s rights

Haley was asked about the state’s right to secede, to which the former South Carolina Governor said that “states have the right to make the decisions that their people want to make.” She added, “I believe in state’s rights; I believe that everything should be as close to the people to decide.”

The former U.N. ambassador continued, “I don’t think the government needs to tell people how to live, how to do anything. I mean, I think that we need to let freedom live.” Then she told the host, Charlamagne Tha God, they should discuss “reality.”

With great certainty, Haley continued, “Let’s talk about what’s reality. Texas isn’t going to secede. That’s not something that they’re going to do.” Aside from Trump, the only GOP presidential hopeful further expressed support for Texas Governor Abbott’s efforts on the border.

The right to “protect Texans”

While the SCOTUS ruled that Texas should remove razor wire at the Texas-Mexico border, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick told Fox News’s Martha MacCallum, “We are putting up wire, Martha, everywhere we can.” Haley commented on the Texas Governor’s determination, “He has to protect Texans.”

Haley said something similar in 2010

During her campaign in 2010, Haley was asked whether a state had the right to secede from the federal union. To that, Haley replied, “I think that they do. I mean, the Constitution says that.”

The Supreme Court disagreed

In 1869, in the Texas v. White case, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the United States is “an indestructible union,” and the justices wrote, “When Texas became one of the United States, she entered into an indissoluble relation.”

The GOP’s longshot nominee wrote on X, “Biden was part of the administration that sued me when I passed one of the toughest anti-illegal immigration laws in the country as governor of South Carolina.”

“Ridiculous” move

Haley added, “It’s absolutely ridiculous that Joe Biden is trying to stop governors from doing everything they can to protect their citizens.”

The University of Houston Hobby School of Public Affairs poll shows that Trump has a 61 percent advantage over Haley in Texas. Trump gathered support from 80% of Texans, while Haley got only 19%. One of the authors commented on Trump’s lead, “With the Republican Party, he’s unmatched.”

After Donald Trump threatened her donors with being “permanently barred” from his world, Haley’s campaign raised one million dollars in less than 24 hours. Axios reported that the presidential hopeful has at least ten fundraisers scheduled in the following weeks.

“Different choice”

Haley campaign spokesperson Olivia Perez Cubas told Axios, “Nikki is the last one standing between the rematch no one wants in Trump and Biden. 70% of Americans want a different choice, and that’s exactly what we’re giving them.”
