Woody Johnson, billionaire and owner of the New York Jets, publicly supported former President Trump in South Carolina on Saturday night, following Trump’s rapid win in the state’s primary.
Jets Owner Backs Trump
As a previous U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom under Trump, Johnson, alongside his wife Suzanne, was present on stage during Trump’s victory speech after the quick victory in the Palmetto State primary.
Steadfast Ally
A member of the Johnson & Johnson founding family, Johnson has openly backed the former president throughout the 2024 campaign.
Trump’s Past Achievements
“Americans remember how good it was or how much better it was on the border, and inflation, and gas prices, and grocery prices, all that, during the Trump administration, and they want to get back there,” Johnson shared on News’ Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo earlier this month.
Trump Back in the White House
Johnson further stated, “So I think the most important thing is getting the former president back in the White House, which looks like it’s happening.”
A Major Win
Donald Trump’s recent victory in the South Carolina Republican presidential primary over Nikki Haley, on her own ground, has significantly boosted his chances. This win, following his success in other early voting states, seemingly concludes the race, despite Haley’s determination to continue competing.
Conservative Powerhouse
Trump’s dominance in South Carolina, a staunchly conservative state, aligns with his consistent support there. The CNN exit poll indicates a strong MAGA affiliation among the voters, with a conservative majority.
General Election Battleground
Biden and Trump have already shifted focus to the general election, with Trump aiming to solidify his control over the GOP. Despite the expected outcome in South Carolina, the distribution of delegates, especially in the congressional districts, is yet to be fully clarified.
Haley’s Glimmer of Hope
CNN’s late Saturday night projection showed that Haley will secure the 1st Congressional District of South Carolina and its three delegates. Although this doesn’t alter the overall race direction, it offers insights into Trump’s future challenges.
The Race Heats Up
As the GOP’s 2024 South Carolina presidential primary wraps up, the pace of the race intensifies. The focus now shifts to a national level, moving beyond the early voting states.
Race for Delegates
By March 12, over half of the Republican National Convention delegates will be assigned, with many states adopting a winner-take-all approach, which could disadvantage Haley despite her strong showings.
Trump, leading significantly, might approach the required 1,215 delegates soon.
Michigan’s Primary Challenge
The forthcoming Michigan primary presents a new challenge, with a unique delegate distribution combining primary and caucus convention results.
The Road to Super Tuesday
Upcoming caucuses in Idaho and Missouri, and primaries in North Dakota, precede Super Tuesday, which will be crucial, with 36% of the delegates up for grabs.
From 2016 to 2024
Trump’s dominance within the GOP is evident once more. His journey from clinching the nomination in 2016, becoming president, to leading the 2024 race despite multiple indictments, has firmly established his hold over the Republican Party.
His success in South Carolina, Nikki Haley’s home state, highlights the drastic changes within the GOP in under a decade.
A Magnet for GOP Supporters
Interestingly, Trump’s takeover hasn’t been entirely hostile, despite his often aggressive stance towards opponents. A significant portion of Republican voters, many of whom believe his claims about the 2020 election, fully support Trump.
Trump’s Personality
His personality traits, which may dismay establishment Republicans, actually contribute to his appeal among a majority of voters.
Haley’s Shift
Haley, originally a tea party conservative aiming to shift the party further right, now appears as an establishment figure in the face of Trump’s right-wing populism.
This primary has only served to reinforce her position as such, both in policy stances and her approach to discussing issues.
The Changing GOP Landscape
The recent South Carolina primary might well have been Senator Tim Scott’s chance to test the waters for the vice-presidential nomination. Scott, who once competed in the 2024 GOP primary, has since developed a close alliance with Trump.
‘The greatest surrogate’
Since exiting the presidential race last November, Scott has emerged as an influential Trump advocate, a role that hasn’t gone unnoticed by the former president. Trump, at a recent rally, praised Scott as an exceptional surrogate, even suggesting that Scott represents Trump’s interests better than his own.
