Tensions are flaring up as Montana Republicans prepare to find the best candidate to unseat Democratic Senator Jon Tester. One strategist close to former President Trump even described it as a “bloodbath” during an NBC interview.
Rosendale vs. Sheehy
The two Republicans likely fighting for a chance to take down Tester are Matt Rosendale and Tim Sheehy. The race is crucial because it signals hope to Republicans they could potentially flip the Senate, which only contributed to tensions flying higher.
Sheehy got all the endormensts
Sheehy, a former Navy SEAL, received major endorsements after announcing he would run for the primaries in June 2023. He got approval from Greg Gianforte, Montana Senator, who said in a statement, “Tim Sheehy is a good friend, and I’m glad he decided to run for the U.S. Senate. Tim’s business experience and commitment to public service is what we need in Washington. I know that Tim Sheehy will serve Montana well in the U.S. Senate, and he has my full support.”
Sheehy gained supporters from other Senators
The Navy SEAL veteran also got endorsements by several other prominent GOP senators, including Tom Cotton of Arkansas, Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, and Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma.
Rosendale and Gaetz
Rosendale lost to Tester by nearly four percentage points in 2018, and he has the approval of some of Trump’s closest allies, including Matt Gaetz. Gaetz campaigned with Rosendale, a regular guest on Steven Bannon’s podcast.
Defending Trump
In a recent X post, Rosendale, a House representative, wrote, “President Trump did not engage in insurrection. Michigan couldn’t prove it, Minnesota couldn’t prove it, and SCOTUS won’t either.”
But not taking phone calls
In January 2023, Georgia firebrand Marjorie Taylor Greene posted on X, “It was the perfect phone call.” One photo shows Greene passing the phone to Rosendale while gesturing no. According to reports, Trump was trying to convince Rosendale and a few Republicans to vote in support of Kevin McCarthy.
Things are not what they appear
Following his 2018 loss, reports claimed that Trump was not happy with Rosendale, and the “perfect phone call” did not help. Things nearly escalated after, according to an NBC source close to Trump, the former president felt almost “ambushed” by Rosendale in December 2023. Rosendale shared photos on X of Trump wearing golf gear, with the caption, “It was great to see the best President of my lifetime, Donald J. Trump, at Mar-a-Lago this morning.”
Trump advisers spoke up
One adviser told NBC, “Obviously, there’s this bloodbath that’s about to play out.” The source added, “Rosendale has a clear Trump world problem that may reach to the highest level of Trump world as he enters this race.”
Enter Bruesewitz
Alex Bruesewitz, a Trump ally and Rosendale’s critic said the Montana GOP had retracted an invitation for him to speak at its convention after Rosendale allies complained. Don Jr. wrote on X, “It’s really disappointing to see some Republicans in Montana engage in leftwing cancel culture. It’s even more disappointing that they would target one of my father’s strongest and most loyal supporters, @alexbruesewitz.”
Do not attack Donald Jr.’s friends
A source close to Trump Jr. told NBC that he “has no plans to get more publicly involved in this primary, but if Rosendale and his allies continue attacking Don’s friends, that will change pretty quickly.”
Rosendale denied his involvement
Speaking to the Washington Examiner, Rosendale said, I’ll be honest with you. I don’t even know who this guy Alan is,” adding, “I’ve had my hands full with productive work.” Bruesewitz told the outlet he supports the “most pro-Trump and pro-America First candidate in every race,” adding that Sheehy endorsed Trump before Rosendale.
Rosendale should stay in the House
Montana Senator Steve Daines told POLITICO, “I really like Matt Rosendale, which is why I am encouraging him to build seniority for the great state of Montana in the House and help Republicans hold their majority.” Daines, the head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, signaled that the state does not want messy primaries.
