While on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” the lifelong Republican commented on remarks made on the third anniversary of the Capitol riots by some of GOP lawmakers. Cheney’s comments came a day after the anniversary of the Capitol attack, and she made it clear that DeSantis’ statements make him “unfit for office.”

Cheney called out Trump and GOP lawmaker Elise Stefanik over their claims that January 6 prisoners were “hostages.”

Speaking on NBC, Stefanik said, “I have concerns about the treatment of January 6 hostages. I have concerns, we have a role in Congress of oversight over our treatment of prisoners, and I believe we’re seeing the weaponization of the federal government against not just President Trump, but we’re seeing it against conservatives.”

Cheney said, “That word she used is exactly the word that Donald Trump uses. And that’s why she’s using it. And it’s outrageous, and it’s disgusting.” She continued, “These are people who were involved in violence against police officers in the assault on the Capitol, and … it’s disgraceful for Donald Trump to be saying what he’s saying.”

The former lawmaker said, “We have other Republican candidates for president like Ron DeSantis who have said they are open to reviewing the cases against these defendants and considering pardons for them.”

Cheney doubled down on her claims and added, “The notion that the Republican Party would continue its efforts to whitewash that day when the peaceful transition of power is at the core of the survival of our republic,” she then paused in response to point at DeSantis, “tells you that they’re unfit for office.”

Social media welcomed Cheney’s comments

Many X users agreed with Cheney. One poster, @Fievel131, shared a clip, and in response, Dr. Cindy Jurie wrote, “Folks in Florida know this firsthand.” X poster called C White said, “He was unfit for office long before that.” 2DogKnight added that DeSantis is “unfit in general.”

The Republican lawmaker from New York was asked if she would certify the elections, but she kept it vague, “We will see if this is a legal and valid election. What we’re seeing so far is that Democrats are so desperate they’re trying to remove President Trump from the ballot.”

Stefanik also did not want to give a straight answer to whether she would be Trump’s running mate. She shared, “Of course, I’d be honored to serve in any capacity in a Trump administration. I’m proud to be the first member of Congress to endorse his reelection, I’m proud to be a strong supporter of President Trump, and he’s going to win this November.”

“I mean, Liz Cheney’s a sick person. I was responsible for her defeat in her state where she couldn’t be beaten, and by the time we finished, she got the lowest vote in the history of politics,” Trump added.
