Representative Lauren Boebert faces additional challenges in her Colorado primary as she continues to lack support amid her district switch-up.
GOP Senators Endorse Sonnenberg
On Thursday, three former Colorado GOP senators who previously represented the 4th District, Cory Gardner, Wayne Allard, and Hank Brown, endorsed Jerry Sonnenberg over Boebert in the primary race.
Sonnenberg’s Political Background
Sonnenberg, a Republican, is a former state senator who has also served in the Colorado House.
Candidacy Announced
In December, Boebert announced her candidacy for reelection to Colorado’s 4th District, abandoning the 3rd District, which she has represented since 2021.
Strategic Shift
Critics contend that Boebert switched districts because she could lose reelection in the 3rd District to her Democratic challenger, Adam Frisch. In 2022, she narrowly won reelection with 546 votes.
Potential Challengers
Frisch is set to run again in 2024, and Boebert would have also faced Republican challenger Jeff Hurd, a Grand Junction attorney, in the 3rd District.
Seven Candidates
Boebert is now among seven Republicans vying for nomination in the upcoming June primary for the 4th District.
MAGA Friendly District
The 4th District is the state’s most conservative and MAGA-friendly District. It is currently held by Republican Ken Buck, who won’t seek reelection.
Disagreement with GOP Narratives
In November, Buck diverged from certain Republican narratives, criticizing statements about the 2020 election being stolen and referring to the events of “January 6 as an unguided tour of the Capitol” as misleading.
Rule of Law Confidence Eroding
Busk, in a statement, stated, “These insidious narratives breed widespread cynicism and erode American confidence in the rule of law,”
Staunch Trump Supporter
Following her victory in the 2020 election in the US, where she unseated incumbent Scott Tipton and flipped the seat from the Democrats, Boebert has staunchly supported former President Donald Trump.
Conspiracy Theory Promoter
Often labeled as a “Far-right” congresswoman, she maintains the assertion that the 2020 election was fraudulent and has faced accusations of promoting conspiracy theories. Boebert opposes vaccine mandates, abortion, and efforts to address climate change and identifies as a born-again Christian.
Image Rehabilitation Uncertain
Despite Boebert’s attempts to rehabilitate her image following several personal controversies, including being ejected from a musical for disruptive behavior, her appeal to the 4th District’s electorate remains uncertain.
Removal from Theater
In September, Boebert and her male companion were escorted out of the Buell Theatre in Denver during a performance of the musical “Beetlejuice” following allegations by audience members of vaping, using a phone, singing, and causing a disturbance.
“Do you know who I am?”
According to the incident report, both individuals first refused to leave and made statements such as “Do you know who I am?” “I am on the board,” and “I will be contacting the mayor.”
Denial and Video Evidence
The congresswomen initially denied allegations of vaping and inappropriate behavior until surveillance video footage emerged, which was widely shared on social media. The footage shows Boebert vaping, exhaling smoke into the air, and dancing in her seat.
Apology Statment
Following the released footage and widespread criticism, Boebert issued a statement, taking responsibility for her actions and expressing regret for not displaying more decorum.
Public Opinion Trends
According to a recent poll conducted by Kaplan Strategies, nearly half (46%) of likely GOP voters in Colorado’s 4th District indicated that they would not support a candidate who recently relocated to the District. Conversely, 22% expressed willingness to do so, while 33% remained undecided.
Challenges and Support for Boebert
While the poll poses challenges for Boebert, Doug Kaplan, president of Kaplan Strategies, told Newsweek that it might not dissuade enough voters from supporting her.
Boebert Leads Republican Field
The survey revealed Boebert’s substantial lead in the Republican field, securing 32% of the vote, while her GOP rivals trailed behind in single digits.
Nearest Competitor
Colorado State Representative Mike Lynch emerged as her nearest competitor, garnering 7% support.
“She will Win”
Kaplan stated, “Unless the party coalescences around one person, she will win,”
