Lauren Boebert Poked Fun at by a Major Colorado Newspaper After Recent GOP Debate

A major Colorado online newspaper released an op-ed last Sunday, poking fun at several aspects of GOP Representative Lauren Boebert’s recent debate performance.

Shift to 4th District: Calculated Play?

Boebert, a prominent pro-Trump voice in the House GOP and serving Colorado’s 3rd District since 2021, is now campaigning for the 4th District. Many see this as her avoiding a rematch with Democrat Adam Frisch in the 3rd District, where she narrowly maintained her seat in 2022 and where Frisch is predicted to win in the upcoming election.

Boebert attributes her move to Frisch’s substantial out-of-state campaign funding.

Mike Littwin of The Colorado Sun, a major Denver-based publication, authored the op-ed, focusing on Boebert’s seeming struggle to define ‘carpetbagger’ during the 4th District’s GOP debate on Thursday.

A Post-civil War Term

The term ‘carpetbagger,’ which dates back to the post-Civil War era, is now commonly used to describe individuals moving to new areas without ties, often for profit or political advantage.

Littwin’s article playfully praised Boebert for her grasp on ‘the definition of a number of words.’ He then shifted to highlight events that have negatively impacted her public image.

From Vaping to Impeachment

These included the incident last September, where she faced accusations of vaping and inappropriately touching her date at a Denver theater, and her backing of the House GOP’s controversial impeachment moves against President Joe Biden.

“And, after all, she does know the definition of a number of words,” Littwin wrote.

“Like vaping and groping and canoodling and flipping the bird. She definitely knows the word impeachment, although she doesn’t seem to understand the concept of high crimes and misdemeanors necessary for impeachment.”

Criminal Records = Badge of Honor?

In his op-ed, Littwin highlighted a debate moment where six of the nine candidates, Boebert among them, acknowledged past arrests, eliciting laughter from the audience. He suggested that such arrests might be becoming a badge of honor in the GOP, citing former President Trump’s legal troubles, including 91 criminal charges.

Despite these, Trump, leading the 2024 GOP presidential primary, claims his innocence.

“It was all so, well, Trumpian. I mean, in light of the 91 felony counts facing Trump, is it now necessary to have an arrest or two on your resume to be a bonafide GOP candidate?” Littwin questioned.

Defaming Millions

Littwin noted that coinciding with the debate, Trump testified in a lawsuit involving writer E. Jean Carroll, where he faced allegations of sexual abuse and defamation. The jury awarded Carroll a substantial $83.3 million.

“That’s a lot of defaming,” he remarked. “and all of it sickeningly malicious.stressing. “

Trump’s Rising Influence

He pointed out that one doesn’t “need to be a political pundit to see that” despite the indictments, Trump’s influence in the presidential primary seems only to strengthen, with his court appearances becoming a central aspect of his campaign strategy.

Third Time Trump?

Littwin highlighted the paradox of the GOP potentially nominating Trump for a third time “despite the cold, hard fact that he could well be a convicted felon by the time he would be allowed back in the Oval Office.”

The Colorado GOP Six

Littwin then turned his attention to what he termed ‘The Colorado GOP Six,’ describing them as relatively minor figures in terms of legal transgressions. He mentioned that beyond Lynch, it’s unclear if any of the group has a conviction record.

He pointed out that while they didn’t lead a coup, Holtorf voted in the state House to commend Ron Hanks for attending the January 6 rally, though Lynch opposed the resolution that also praised Tina Peters and questioned the 2020 election outcome.

Past Arrests

“Harvey was arrested as a teen by an MP for running — jay-running, I guess — across a wet road. Holtorf, the anti-abortion candidate who is now having to explain whether or not he once paid for a girlfriend’s abortion, was arrested twice long ago for being in bar fights — which should surprise no one who has seen him on the House floor,” Littwin commented, citing Sun reporter Jesse Paul.

Arrested for Speeding?

He added, “Sonnenberg was arrested for speeding. You don’t usually end up in jail for speeding, but Sonnenberg, who was probably the most normal candidate on the stage, said it was years ago and had something to do with bail.”
