President Joe Biden, on his second trip to South Carolina this month, just one week before the Democratic presidential primary, sought to build momentum among Black voters in a state that saved his campaign in 2020.
Trump’s Defeat Reason
“You’re the reason I’m president… and you are the reason Donald Trump is a defeated former president,” he declared on Saturday at a Democratic party fundraiser.
“Trump is a Loser”
The President continued, “You are the reason Donald Trump is a loser, and you’re the reason we’re going to win and beat him again.”
Enthusiastic Response
Biden’s remarks, delivered at the South Carolina State Fairgrounds in Columbia, electrified the crowd. Supporters, brandishing Biden/Harris signs, responded with chants for another four-year term.
Biden Sharpens Critique of Trump
Recently, President Biden has intensified his criticism of Trump in his speeches. During an earlier January visit to South Carolina, Biden took a jab at Trump, remarking, “Losers are taught to concede when they lose — and he is a loser,” highlighting Trump’s refusal to concede the 2020 election as a breach of a fundamental American democratic principle.
Economic Progress Highlighted
The President highlighted significant economic strides under his administration, particularly noting the unprecedented growth of Black small businesses and the lowest recorded Black unemployment in U.S. history.
Democratic Primary’s New Order
The recent reordering of the Democratic presidential primaries puts South Carolina at the forefront. This change, marking a departure from a 50-year tradition, ensures that voters of color play a crucial role in selecting the party’s nominee.
Diverse Voters
Biden, in a 2022 letter, stressed the necessity of diverse voter support. He stated, “You cannot be the Democratic nominee and win a general election unless you have overwhelming support from voters of color – and that includes Black, Brown and Asian American & Pacific Islander voters.”
Shift in Voter Support
Recent polls indicate a shift in Biden’s support among voters of color compared to 2020 levels. A Roper Center poll highlighted a sharp decline in Black voter support, from 87% to 63%.
Trump Gains Support
In contrast to Biden, former President Donald Trump’s campaign has witnessed an increase in its support from Black voters.
According to an NBC November poll, 20% of Black voters would consider voting for Trump. In 2020, 12% of Black voters supported Trump, as per the outlet’s exit polling.
Diverse Voter Base
However, despite the decline, the Democratic party remains more racially diverse than the GOP, with 40% of its registered voters being nonwhite.
Endorsements and Support
Prominent Black Democratic legislators, such as House Democratic leader Congressman Hakeem Jeffries from New York and Congressman James Clyburn from South Carolina, campaigned on behalf of the Biden/Harris ticket.
Clyburn’s Key Role
Clyburn is acknowledged for his role in securing Biden’s victory in South Carolina in 2020 and revitalizing his previously struggling campaign.
Phillips Determination
Biden’s Democratic rival, Representative Dean Phillips, also voiced his determination to challenge Trump at the event.
Pass the Torch
Phillips said, “My invitation to President Biden is to pass the torch to a new generation ready to take the stage, ready to take that man on and ready to win.”
Critique from Yang
Andrew Yang, a former presidential candidate supporting Phillips, criticized the Democratic party’s handling of the primaries. He questioned whether the party’s approach was genuinely geared towards defeating Trump or simply ensuring Biden’s nomination.
Concerns About Party Dynamics
Yang expressed concern that the Democratic party’s focus on Biden might not be in the best interest of a competitive race or the country. He argued that this could lead to complacency and hinder the party’s broader goals.
Trump Leading Biden
According to Real Clear Polling, released on Saturday, if the 2024 election were a rematch, Trump is projected to receive over 47% of the vote, surpassing Biden, who is predicted to secure 43%.
In 2020, Trump secured 55.1% of the vote in South Carolina.
