Lauren Boebert Gets Warning Signs From Colorado Voters In The Race For The New District

Colorado’s 4th Congressional District voters sent a warning sign to the Lauren Boebert campaign directly connected to the congresswoman’s decision to switch districts.

Almost half of voters do not want someone who just moved to the district

Kaplan Strategies polling showed that around 46 percent of Republican or Republican-leaning voters from Colorado’s 4th Congressional district will not vote for someone who just moved to the district. On the contrary, only 22 percent said they would.

The controversy

Lauren Boebert switched districts in December 2023 when she announced on Facebook that she would run for Ken Buck’s seat instead of seeking re-elections in the third Congressional district. She faced accusations of “carpetbagging.” Colorado State Representative Matt Soper told The Independent, “When the going got tough, she just left, and she behaved like a carpetbagger, moving from one district to another. And I will tell you that, on the Western Slope, that is one thing that’s not tolerated.”

Still, Boebert is a favorite

The same survey found that 30 percent of voters polled believe Boebert has good character and judgment, compared to 45 percent who think the opposite. Nine candidates are running for the 4th district. Doug Kaplan, president of Kaplan Strategies and political strategist, told Newsweek that despite these numbers, Boebert is the only one with double-digit support.

In fact, Colorado lawmaker Mike Lynch is closest to Boebert, and he holds 7 percent support. Kaplan concluded that Boebert will win “unless the party coalescences around one person.” But, there is also a question of Boebert’s disapproval ratings.

Puzzling case

Kaplan said he had not seen a polling where the candidate most likely to win “has such unfavorable.” Over one in four GOP voters do not hold positive views about Boebert in a district where the majority does not identify as “MAGA Republicans.” Still, around 66 percent said they would vote for Trump in the general elections.

Boebert is a “vulnerable” but “favorite”

Kaplan told Courthouse News that while Boebert is “the favorite,” she is also a “vulnerable” candidate. The MAGA firebrand beat Democrat Adam Frisch by less than 600 votes in the 2022 midterms, and many still believe that she moved districts to avoid being face-to-face with Frisch again.

Split among Republicans

Days before the polling was conducted, the Boebert campaign received more bad news. Three former Colorado Republican senators who once represented the 4th Congressional district, Cory Gardner, Wayne Allard, and Hank Brown, endorsed Jerry Sonnenberg.

Name recognition

However, Boebert was endorsed by House Speaker Johnson, who called her a “relentless force for conservative governance.” She also has name recognition that goes beyond what is typical for a House member. Boebert’s personal life made it to the tabloids, and whether she wanted it or not, it proved to be helpful in gaining name recognition.

Apart from often sharing outrageous posts on X, the Colorado congresswoman split from her husband of nearly two decades, became a grandma at 36, and was caught in the act during the Beetlejuice musical. Boebert started 2024 with allegations of domestic abuse. Jayson Boebert received a restraining order that states he’s banned from making contact with his now ex-wife and their three underage children.

Speaking to the Journal, Republican voter Tammi Flemming said,  “On Facebook, she’s not been well received by Republicans. It’s the shenanigans and the drama and moving districts.” However, another voter, Mark Peters, stated he loves Boebert because “She’s stood up to Democrats on everything.”

The straw poll

During the first primary debate in January, Boebert ranked fifth out of eight candidates in a straw poll. More importantly, none of her primary opponents said they would endorse her if they backed out of the race.

Many mocked Boebert

Following the informal survey, Democrat Jasmine Crockett offered Boebert “thoughts and prayers” while referring to her heavy pro-gun stance. The Republicans Against Trump account declared Boebert was “finished.” Tristan Snell, a lawyer and commentator, shared, “She abandoned her congressional district because she was going to lose. Now she moved into a new district where even most Republicans don’t want her.”
