After Rep. Robert Garcia listed some of the controversial proposals for the southern border suggested by Trump, including building moats filled with alligators, Rep. Boebert went on One America News to mock him. She said she would support all the proposals Garcia listed, including the alligator moats.
Joking around
“I do believe that Robert Garcia did present to the nation our newest border bill,” Boerbert laughingly said, “with the gators, and electric fence, and spikes.”
All for it
“Sign me up,” she said. “I will co-sponsor that legislation, I’m happy to.” Boebert had one stipulation, however: “Just don’t take any more taxes.”
Garcia’s comment
Boebert responded to Garcia’s comments during a House Homeland Security Committee meeting on Tuesday. The Democrat reminded his colleagues that “the Donald Trump and MAGA plan is alligator moats, bombing northern Mexico, sho_ting migrants in the legs, electrifying the fence, and putting spikes on [it].”
No good
“What a joke,” Garcia wrote on an X post of his comment. The New York Times reported in 2019 that Trump had privately discussed using snakes or alligators to deter migrants from crossing the southern border.
Giving credit
“I do think that the … original man who claimed that we need gators and a moat at the border was comedian Ron White,” Boebert said on One America News. “I think we need to give some credit to him there.”
The real focus
“All jokes aside,” Boebert continued, “we do need to hold Secretary Mayorkas accountable.” House Republicans are attempting to impeach Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of Homeland Security.
Shaky grounds
Republicans charged Mayorkas with “willfully and systematically [refusing] to comply” with immigration laws, something he has vehemently denied. Impeachment usually requires evidence that the accused has committed high crimes and misdemeanors, and Republicans have yet to produce any.
Political stunt
Rep. Garcia dismissed the Republican effort as a “sham.” “This is a political stunt and a hit job, ordered by two people, Donald Trump and Marjorie Taylor Greene,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said.
Figment of imagination
“There is no treason. There is no bribery. There is no high crime and misdemeanor,” Rep. Dan Goldman said. “You have two completely made-up accusations in a litany of articles of impeachment that simply recite policy disputes.”
Major order
According to the New York Times, in March 2019, Trump ordered his aides to shut down the entire border with Mexico in the next 24 hours. “The president was frustrated,” one aide recalled in October of that year.
Cruel order
Trump also publicly suggested sho_ting migrants who threw rocks, backing off when his aides explained that this would be illegal. He instead suggested sh_oting migrants in the legs to slow them down, according to the New York Times.
Both sides
Biden has spent weeks fighting to get his border bill approved by the Senate, which includes numerous concessions to Republican demands. This week, he pledged to “shut down the border” if the bill was passed.
