On Monday, former Trump press secretary and current Fox host Kayleigh McEnany went on a rant about the latest survey results released by the Presidential Greatness Project, which saw Trump come dead last. McEnany bitterly criticized the results, but was heavily criticized herself by experts and individuals online — including fellow conservatives.
The rankings
The Presidential Greatness Project conducted its regular survey of experts on presidential politics between November 15 and December 31, 2023. Respondents were asked to rate each president on a scale of 0 to 100.
The results
Abraham Lincoln took the top spot, a position he occupied in the Project’s 2015 and 2018 surveys. FDR and George Washington occupied silver and bronze positions, respectively.
Recent raise
Former President Barack Obama took the seventh position. Since 2015, he’s risen nine places.
Dismal finish
Meanwhile, Trump occupied the final spot, earning a tragic average score of 10.92 from the 154 experts who provided usable responses to the survey. That was the same position he earned in 2018, though it’s a decrease from 2015 — when he managed to squeak into second-last place.
Complaints
“They are the ivory-tower elites who in no way represent the view of the American people,” McEnany complained. “This is infuriating in so many ways,” she added.
Universal judgment
However, Republican experts who responded to the Presidential Greatness Survey placed Trump in the 41st position. Conservatives placed him at 43rd. Independents, Moderates, Liberals, and Democrats all placed him last.
Biden’s ranking
Republicans and Conservatives ranked Biden 30th — far higher than they placed Trump. Democrats and Liberals thought he deserved 13th place, while Moderates put him in 20th and Independents 19th.
Average score
Republicans gave Trump an average score of 31.38 and Biden 47.69. Meanwhile, Democrats gave Trump an average score of 6.66 and Biden 66.88.
Not surprising
“Shocking that the one guy out of 45 who tried to destroy the thing that the job explicitly required him to preserve, protect, and defend would come in 45 out of 45,” George Conway wrote on X.
Surprised he got any support
“How could any sentient person not rank him last?” Bill Carter wrote. “He tried to overthrow the government for pity’s sake.”
Laying out the evidence
“Impeached twice. Failed insurrection. Dude now has 91 criminal counts. Pretty sure the worst,” Wajahat Ali noted.
Unique president
“He’s the ONLY President in American history who lost an election, refused to concede, refused to participate in the peaceful transfer of power, and then he committed crimes trying to overthrow that election,” self-proclaimed ultra-conservative Joe Walsh commented. “That alone makes him our country’s worst president.”
Lousy competition
“William Harrison died 31 days into the job,” one user wrote, “AND WAS STILL BETTER THAN TRUMP.”
Complaint dismissed
“Infuriating?” another user commented in response to a clip of McEnany’s outburst. “It was inevitable. He was horrendous in so many ways. Just like you.”
In comparison
President Biden, meanwhile, achieved 14th place with an average score of 62.66. That put him ahead of Ronald Reagan, whose score of 61.62 placed him in 16th, a decrease of seven spots since 2015.
Credit where it’s due
“Biden is ranked high for kicking out that dumpster fire lmao,” one user wrote under the clip of McEnany’s complaints.
Partisan divide
According to the Presidential Greatness Project, the responses for Biden and Obama showed a high degree of partisan polarization. Reagan and George H. W. Bush also received polarized results.
Different opinions
While Lincoln took the top spot, Republicans and Conservatives believed Washington deserved first place. They also placed James Buchanan in last, when overall he was ranked 44th, ahead only of Trump.
Universal support
“Interestingly,” the report noted, the results for Bill Clinton were not polarized along partisan lines.
