John Oliver proposes $1M per year to encourage Clarence Thomas to resign

The “Last Week Tonight” host, John Oliver, revived calls for Justice Clarence Thomas’ resignation and even offered him $1 million each year to retire from SCOTUS.

Not a joke

The comedian declared, “We have a special offer for you tonight: We are prepared to offer you $1 million a year for the rest of your life if you simply agree to leave the Supreme Court immediately and never come back.” Oliver continued, “This is not a joke. If you watch our show, you know jokes aren’t really our thing. This is real. A million dollars a year until you or I die.”

Oliver said that Thomas made the lives of Americans “demonstrably worse” and recalled his wife’s alleged work to attempt to overturn the 2020 elections, lavishing trips with GOP donor Harlan Crow, the justice’s $267,230 R.V., overturning Roe vs. Wade, and more.

“I think you’re thinking, what would my friend say if I take this offer? Will they judge me as they sit in their boardrooms and mega yachts and Hitler shrines? Will they still treat me to luxury vacations and sing songs about me off their phones?” Oliver taunted.

The beauty of friendship

The comedian’s message to Justice Thomas was simple, “Well, that’s the beauty of friendship, Clarence. If they’re real friends, they’ll love you no matter what your job is. So I guess this might be the perfect way to find out who your real friends actually are.”

Easy decision

Oliver offered, “Lot on your plate right now. From stripping away women’s rights to hearing Jan. 6 cases, you definitely shouldn’t be hearing two potentially helping rollback decades of federal regulations.” The host added, “So that’s the offer. $1 million a year, Clarence. And a brand new condo on wheels.”

According to a ProPublica report, Thomas complained about salary to GOP lawmakers, so the offer seems more than acceptable. So, what’s the catch? The host shared that this was his idea, not HBO’s, and said, “I am personally on the hook. You can make me really regret this. I could be doing stand-up tours to pay for your retirement for years.”

The British-born host finally revealed, “All you have to do in return is sign the contract and get the f..k off the Supreme Court.” The late-night host gave the justice 30 days to respond to his offer.

Why not?

Supreme court justices are appointed for life and earn a yearly salary of $298,500. The 2023 ProPublica report claims that Thomas complained to the GOP lawmaker that if Congress didn’t increase salaries, “one or more justices will leave soon.”

The allegations

ProPublica noted, “But in the years that followed … Thomas accepted a stream of gifts from friends and acquaintances that appears to be unparalleled in the modern history of the Supreme Court.”

Under pressure

Crow and conservative legal activist Leonard Leo are awaiting subpoenas after the Senate Judiciary Committee voted on their approval. The subpoenas came after ProPublica’s reports detailed the relationship between Thomas and Crow. Leo said he would not cooperate with an “unlawful campaign of political retribution.”

Waiting for SCOTUS

After a three-judge panel in D.C. rejected Trump’s claims of presidential immunity, Trump asked the U.S. Supreme Court to pause his federal criminal prosecution over allegedly conspiring to interfere with the 2020 elections. The U.S. eagerly awaits the SCOTUS’s decision since it never ruled regarding presidential immunity in criminal cases.

The Supreme Court also has to decide whether Trump is eligible to be on Colorado’s ballot following The Colorado Supreme Court ruling on December 19 stating that Trump is ineligible to be president under Section 3 of Amendment 14. Following the hearing, SCOTUS will likely side with the former president.
