House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan could face legal actions after the Department of Justice reported that GOP’s star witness said that he had met with “officials associated with Russian intelligence.”
The key witness

In a clip from Fox News, Jordan stated, “The most corroborating evidence we have is that 1023 form.” However, the same witness, Alexander Smirnov, who provided the form, was charged with lying to the FBI and making false claims about the President and his son, Hunter Biden. Special Counsel David Weiss leads the investigation into Smirnov.
Inside the DOJ’s memo

“Smirnov’s contacts with Russian officials who are affiliated with Russian intelligence services are not benign,” the memo said, and added, “During his custodial interview on February 14, Smirnov admitted that officials associated with Russian intelligence were involved in passing a story about (Hunter Biden).”
Things went from bad to worse

The latest court filings by the Department of Justice claim that Smirnov revealed that he had met with “officials associated with Russian intelligence” and “extensive foreign ties.” This raised significant concerns regarding highly positioned Republicans, including James Comer and Ohio’s Jordan.
Smirnov was arrested at the airport

Following arrest at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, the prosecutors wrote that Smirnov is “actively peddling new lies” that affect the 2024 elections. The former FBI informant is now freed from custody, with specific terms.
The unnamed person

The filings from the DOJ claim that in his interview with the FBI, Smirnov talked about a Russian government official who “controls two groups of individuals tasked with carrying out assassination efforts in a third-party country, a Russian representative to another country, and as someone with ties to a particular Russian intelligence service.”
Duped or on it

“Jim Jordan, Chuck Grassley, and James Comer were either duped by Smirnov and the Kremlin — or they were in on it. Either way, DOJ must subpoena every single communication Jordan, Grassley, and Comer had with or about Smirnov and anything related,” shared on X a lawyer Tristen Snell.
A warning

“When the Democrats take back the House, they need to censure James Comer and Jim Jordan and remove them from their committees,” declared Chris D. Jackson, a Democratic election commissioner in Tennessee.
Accusations are flying

“Sorry. Did I say @jamescomer and @Jim_Jordan were easy dupes for Russian spies? I meant the entire impeachment effort,” wrote a journalist, Marcy Wheeler, on X.
Looming subpoenas

“The Department of Justice should subpoena and probe whether Jordan was either deceived by Russian intelligence or involved in a conspiracy to oust President Biden,” added Brian Allen, a pre-law student.
Burisma is the “key”

Jordan previously told reporters, “The impeachable offense is — I think, the key thing is in Burisma.” Smirnov claimed that Ukrainian energy company Burisma paid then-VP Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden “$5 million each” in exchange for political favors.
Raskin told House GOP to drop the inquiries

The top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, Jamie Raskin, already called the House GOP to drop the efforts after a year-long investigation. The Maryland Democrat stated, “It is an undeniable fact that Republicans’ allegations against President Biden have always been a tissue of lies built on conspiracy theories, and I formally call on Speaker Johnson, Chairman Comer, and House Republicans to stop promoting this nonsense and end their doomed impeachment inquiry.”
Comer tried to play down the role of the witness

Comer, the House Oversight Committee Chairman, said that “the impeachment inquiry is not reliant on the FBI’s FD-1023.” Previously, Comer told the reporters, “The FBI told the committee the confidential human source was credible and trusted.”
Calls for Comer’s resignation

Political strategist Simon Rosenberg said on X, “Calls for Comer to resign should be cascading across the country tomorrow. He has betrayed the country.” Political commentator Keith Olbermann echoed Rosenber’s words, “Congressman James Comer needs to resign.”
