Impeachment threatens Democrat Governor over gun laws: “You’re acting like a dictator”

Two GOP lawmakers filed a resolution to initiate impeachment proceedings against Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. The resolution comes after her public health orders suspended the right to carry firearms in some public places in the Albuquerque area.

GOP Representatives Stefani Lord of Sandia Park and John Block of Alamogordo said that the Governor acts like a “dictator. Lord, who is the founder of the Pro-Gun Women, stated, “The point is that she has too much power,” and added, “We’re just trying to say to her, ‘You have too much power, you’re acting like a dictator. … And we’re going to impeach you.’”

CBS reported that Lord said in a statement, “The rights of New Mexicans are not up for debate,” adding, “No matter how hard Lujan Grisham tries to violate the constitution, she will never succeed.”

Grisham’s spokesperson said it was a stunt

Grisham’s spokesperson, Maddy Hayden, told KOAT that it was “embarrassing” that the lawmakers were not pursuing “meaningful legislation to address the  issues that New Mexicans are literally begging them to address.” Hayden added they were more interested in “political stunts” than engaging in issues like public safety, education, health care, and more.

Further, Hayden blasted the two legislators’ “priorities include banning necrophilia, building a border wall between Mexico and New Mexico, castrating sex offenders, reinstating the death penalty — and raising quail without a permit.”

The bill was already partly blocked

In the latest twist, a U.S. District Court judge has upheld her decision to block portions of a public health order from New Mexico’s Governor. Judge Kea Riggs ruled that Grisham did not provide a historical tradition of prohibiting firearms in public parks or similar areas in the past.

The Governor’s spokesperson said, “Judge Riggs’ opinion ignores this case law and the massive amount of historical evidence in the record supporting the constitutionality of the temporary restrictions imposed by the public health order.”

Hayden added, “We respectfully disagree with the opinion and are confident that our ongoing appeal to the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals will be successful.”

The ruling comes after numerous lawsuits

Grisham, a second-term Democrat, faced backlash following the order and several lawsuits. Judge Kea Riggs’s ruling responded to a lawsuit filed by Torrance County resident James Springer.

In September 2023, an 11-year-old boy was shot dead after an Albuquerque Isotopes game. Harold Medina, Chief of the Albuquerque Police Department, wrote on X that the “investigators determined this was a case of mistaken identity.”

Following the boy’s death, Grisham signed an executive order and “issued a 30-day ban on the open & concealed carrying of guns in Albuquerque and Bernalillo County.”

“Cooling-off period”

The Governor said in October, “The purpose is to try to create a cooling-off period while we figure out how we can better address public safety and gun violence.” The executive order earned the Democratic Governor praise and massive backlash.

Block said about the impeachment efforts, “If you break your oath, you should be held accountable because if we do not hold her accountable, this is going to open up Pandora’s Box.”

Business as usual

Grisham issued a statement on the 51st anniversary of Roe vs. Wade. She wrote on X, “New Mexico is a state that will not stop fighting for and supporting women in all aspects of their health care – and those efforts remain as critical as ever as attacks on abortion rights continue.” The Governor proposed additional measures to address gun violence.
