House GOP moving toward holding Hunter Biden in contempt over subpoena

House Republicans are closer to holding the First Son, Hunter Biden, in contempt after he refused to comply with a congressional subpoena for closed-door testimony and had a press conference in front of Congress.

James Comer, an Oversight Committee Chairman, was joined by the Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan, and the two Republicans said Biden “blatantly defied” subpoenas. The two issued a joint statement.

The statement reads, “Our investigation has produced significant evidence suggesting President Biden knew of, participated in, and benefitted from his family cashing in on the Biden name.” Comer and Jordan added, “We will not provide him with special treatment because of his last name.”

Raskin ridiculed the statement

Jamie Raskin of Maryland, part of the Oversight Committee, “Instead of taking yes for an answer, Chairman Comer has now obstructed his own hapless investigation by denying Hunter Biden the opportunity to answer all the committee’s questions in front of the American people and the world.” Raskin was referring to Biden’s request for an open hearing.

Hunter Biden held a press conference on Capitol Hill after he was denied an open hearing. He said, “My father was not financially involved in my business, not as a practicing lawyer, not as a board member of Burisma, not in my partnership with the Chinese private businessman, not in my investments at home and abroad, and certainly not as an artist.”

President Biden’s son Hunter continued, “There is no evidence to support the allegations that my father was financially involved in my business because it did not happen.” But, he also added how the GOP mocked his “struggle with addiction” and tried to “dehumanize” him.

Hunter Biden raised important questions

The First son asked, “Republicans do not want an open process where Americans can see their tactics, expose their baseless inquiry, or hear what I have to say. What are they afraid of? I am here.”

Biden wanted transparency

According to Hunter Biden’s lawyers, Hunter was “making this choice because the Committee has demonstrated time and again it uses closed-door sessions to manipulate, even distort, the facts and misinform the American public—a hearing would ensure transparency and truth in these proceedings.”

GOP’s Comer and Jordan said that a brief hearing divided among Democrats and Republicans would not be sufficient, while legal counsel can do more behind closed doors.

The question of Jordan’s subpoena

Many questioned Jordan’s reported subpoena issued by the House committee investigating the Jan. 6. Daily Beast reminded that Ohio Republican, “after defying subpoenas to appear for depositions before the committee, Jordan was referred to the House ethics committee.”

Jim Jordan violated House ethics by defying subpoenas, the Jan. 6 committee concluded. Still, his spokesman said that it was “a “political stunt made by a Select Committee that knowingly altered evidence, blocked minority representation on a committee for the first time in the history of the U.S. House of Representatives, and failed to respond to Mr. Jordan’s numerous letters and concerns surrounding the politicization and legitimacy of the committee’s work.”

Raskin also wondered

On X, the high-ranked Democrat and constitutional law professor shared in December, “Hunter Biden will answer questions under oath in front of the world—but unless he testifies in secret so he can be misquoted, @RepJamesComer will hold him in contempt? What a joke. Jim Jordan blew off HIS subpoena. Comer doesn’t want the truth—and can’t handle it.”

The Associated Press reviewed documents regarding Comer’s alleged wealth, but he denied any wrongdoing in establishing a shell company. Instead, Comer called out Democrats and added how the criticism “only dumb, financially illiterate people pick up on.”
