Former United States Representative Joe Walsh, who admitted it was wrong to back Trump, went on an explosive rant and warned, “It’s too late” for the Republican party while pleading, “Wake the hell up, America!”
Walsh against Trump’s immunity
Writing on X, the former Republican discussed the topic of presidential immunity, “Another word for a President with “absolute immunity” is a King. Or a dictator. And in this country, we don’t allow Kings or dictators to rule. Right?”
It is not a race
Walsh also expressed that the GOP primary was not a race, writing on X, “It’s been Trump’s from the very beginning.” He elaborated that the media tried to make it seem like a race, “but this party belongs to Trump. And this primary is his. Always has been. It’s never been a race.”
Walsh on MSNBC
Speaking to Charles Coleman Jr. on MSNBC, Walsh declared, “I am a hardcore conservative, but I opposed Trump. I could never, ever get elected as a Republican again. This is what this party is. It is not going to change; it must be defeated — end of story.”
The GOP is gone
GOP strategist Rina Shah said that Republicans need to get “better people running” to stop the spread of MAGA Republicans. But Walsh disagreed and said, “I love Rina, but it’s too late.” He then exploded, “Wake the hell up, America!” Walsh also repeated that the GOP as he knew it is gone for good.
Walsh goes blue
On his X account, the former GOP representative from Illinois wrote, “The 2024 Presidential election will be a choice between 1) an old guy who reveres our democracy and abides by the rule of law and 2) an old guy who despises our democracy and believes he’s above the law. Should be such an easy choice, right?”
Tried to beat Trump
Walsh announced in 2019 his presidential bid against then-President Donald Trump. He ended his campaign in February 2020 but explained that Trump’s behavior in the office inspired him to try.
Walsh’s warning
The conservative talk show host and writer expressed in a Daily Beast piece that Trump wanted “his supporters to be angry, furious, and incensed if he lost the 2020 election.” Walsh continued, “He wanted violence. He wanted chaos. He wanted his supporters to be so damn pissed off that they would use violence to keep him in office.”
On Trump’s D.C. indictment
Walsh writes, “The indictment paints a picture of Trump and his co-conspirators systematically trying everything possible to overturn the election results.” He added how, “When violence unfolded at the Capitol, Trump refused to stop it.” Therefore, Walsh explained, “We must not become so inured to Trump’s madness that we normalize what he’s done.”
Calling Trump a “cult leader”
Following the Georgia indictment, Walsh compared former President Trump to a “cult leader” and described the GOP as “a cult.” He told MSNBC’s Symone Sanders-Townsend, “This is not a normal political party.”
Criticizing Trump came with a price
Walsh discussed the impact of criticizing Trump and said his radio show on the Gab Radio Network was canceled due to it. At the time, he wrote on X, “The network is run by a big Trumper, and he’s wanted to boot me for a while.” That’s why he was not “surprised.”
The lesson
Walsh said, “The lesson here is if you want to be viable in conservative media, you can’t be anti-Trump.” He continued, “If you’re outspoken like me against Trump, you have no place.”
Repeat of 2019
Walsh already lost a show in 2019, and on CNN, he said, “I’m a conservative. I’m a loud, outspoken, anti-Trump conservative. And that’s just not a fit on conservative talk radio.”
