Nikki Haley slammed Donald Trump’s remarks about Black people at a Friday event as “disgusting,” arguing it’s a clear sign the GOP is headed for defeat in the presidential race with him as their candidate.
Trump’s ‘Chaos’
She criticized his approach, stating, “That’s the chaos that comes with Donald Trump. That’s the offensiveness that’s going to happen every day between now and the general election, which is why I continue to say Donald Trump cannot win a general election. He won’t.”
Trump’s Remarks at Gala
At the Black Conservative Federation Gala in Columbia, S.C., former President Donald Trump stirred controversy with remarks about Black voters, implying their support is tied to his legal troubles and making light of how he could only spot Black attendees because of the intense stage lighting.
Legal Troubles as Voter Appeal?
Former President Donald Trump asserted on Friday that his legal entanglements and mug shot have garnered him support among Black voters, suggesting they identify with being unfairly targeted.
Trump’s Discrimination Narrative
“I got indicted for nothing, for something that is nothing. They were doing it because it’s election interference and then I got indicted a second time, and a third time and a fourth time. And a lot of people said that that’s why the Black people like me because they have been hurt so badly and discriminated against, and they actually viewed me as I’m being discriminated against,” he explained to a group of Black conservatives, amidst facing 91 criminal charges.
Oppression Themes in Speech
Addressing the audience at a gala organized by the Black Conservative Federation, Donald Trump emphasized to the Black conservatives present that they are uniquely aware of the injustices stemming from corrupt systems aimed at oppressing individuals and stripping them of their freedoms and rights
Uniting Over Injustices?
He remarked, “You understand that. I think that’s why the Black people are so much on my side now because they see what’s happening to me happens to them.”
Trump’s Mug Shot
He also highlighted the peculiar embrace of his mug shot by the Black community, saying, “The mug shot, we’ve all seen the mug shot, and you know who embraced it more than anybody else? The Black population. It’s incredible. You see Black people walking around with my mug shot, you know they do shirts.”
Red Flag on Trump’s Nomination
Nikki Haley, after voting in the South Carolina primary, called these comments a “huge warning sign” for the GOP if Trump is their nominee.
‘Disgusting’
“It’s disgusting, but that’s what happens when he goes off the teleprompter,” Haley commented to the press after casting her ballot on Kiawah Island.
Haley’s Struggle in Early Primaries
Republican presidential hopeful Nikki Haley has faced a series of setbacks, failing to secure wins in Iowa and New Hampshire, placing second to “none of these candidates” in Nevada’s non-delegate primary where Donald Trump was absent, and now, losing the primary in her own backyard of South Carolina, despite her history as a two-term governor there.
Trump’s Chaos Costs
Haley is trying to convince voters that Trump’s chaotic approach will only harm the Republican Party’s chances in the upcoming November elections.
Haley Trails in Polls
Currently, she finds herself behind Trump in both South Carolina and national polls as the primary battle heads to Michigan next week.
Uncommon Campaign Persistence
Her determination to stay in the race despite these defeats places her in an uncommon scenario: a candidate who persists in the face of repeated losses, a path not taken by other significant, modern contenders.
Haley vs. Historical Withdrawals
Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, who competed in the 2016 race that ultimately nominated Trump, withdrew after losing his home state. Jeb Bush, another Floridian and former governor, exited the race sooner, following a lackluster performance in South Carolina.
The Outliers of Presidential Races
Typically, candidates who see the odds stacked against them bow out after the Iowa caucuses or the New Hampshire primary, aiming to dodge the humiliation of losing in their own state.
However, there are those who press on despite the setbacks. These candidates often find themselves the outliers of their own parties.
