“As opposed to being scattered around many different places across this region, they will be operating out of one place. It will amass a large army in a very strategic area. It will increase the speed and flexibility of the Texas National Guard to be able to respond to crossings,” Abbott stated.

This expansion could intensify existing tensions between state and federal authorities, as Governor Abbott persists in executing his unique tactics to discourage migrant crossings at non-entry points along the southern border.

Migrant Wave

Migrants take part in a caravan towards the border with the United States in Arriaga community, Chiapas State, Mexico, on January 8, 2024. In December, migrant encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border surged to an unprecedented 302,000, with the fiscal year 2022 seeing a record 2.2 million apprehensions.

Over 100,000 migrants have been relocated to major cities such as Washington, Los Angeles, and New York.

Without offering concrete proof, Governor Abbott has attributed the recent reduction in border crossings in the Shelby Park area and the simultaneous rise in other areas like Arizona to his border initiatives.

Notably, the state’s actions in Shelby Park encompass merely 1% of the total southern border.
