Ex-Trump Aide Says Former President Is Out of Cash

On Thursday, short-lived Trump aide Anthony Scaramucci alleged on X that Trump was out of money. He argued this was the motive behind Trump’s attempted takeover of the Republican National Committee.

“Trump is out of money,” Scaramucci claimed, “which is why he is going hard at Ronna Romney so he can take over the RNC treasury.”

“Ronna Romney” refers to Ronna McDaniel, whose uncle is Republican Senator Mitt Romney. McDaniel is the current chair of the Republican National Committee.

According to major news outlets, including the New York Times and CNN, McDaniel plans to step down from her role after the South Carolina Republican presidential primary on Feb 24. However, RNC spokespeople have denied this, saying McDaniel has no plans to leave her role.

On Feb 12, Trump endorsed various allies for leadership positions within the RNC. In particular, he suggested that his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, should replace McDaniel.

Trump also nominated Michael Whatley for committee chair and Chris LaCivita as chief financial officer. “This group of three is highly talented, battle-tested, and smart,” Trump wrote. “They have my complete and total endorsement to lead the Republican National Committee.”

According to the Guardian, Trump’s endorsements were “a move to quell any intra-party dissent toward Trump.” “I think [McDaniel did great when she ran Michigan for me,” Trump said in early February. “I think she did OK, initially, in the RNC. I would say right now there’ll probably be some changes made.”

Determined enemy

Scaramucci only lasted 11 days as Trump’s communications director. Since then, he has become one of the loudest critics of the former president, calling him a “low life,” “full-blown racist,” “son of a bit..h,” “maniacally narcissistic,” and “off his rocker” in a 2020 interview with the Guardian.

Self-defeating

“He’s doing things every single day that is literally forcibly unraveling his political career, and that is the hidden secret, the underbelly of a narcissist,” Scaramucci said in 2020. “They have a very full-blown self-destructive streak in their personalities. He’s got his hand on the self-detonator now.”

Pointless move

“Lara will make sure Trump can steal more money from the RNC,” one X user commented under Scaramucci’s post. “I get that,” another wrote, “however, the RNC is almost broke as well. The big money has left the Trump campaign and the RNC.”

No money left

“There is very little money in the RNC treasure,” one X user commented. “The RNC is broke, too,” another wrote. “This situation is going to be pathetic, funny, and compelling all at once to watch unfold.”

Easy job

“The man bankrupted a casino,” one user joked, “so running the RNC into the ground should be fairly easy for him.”

Unacceptable

Nikki Haley, Trump’s sole remaining opponent in the Republican primary, has repeatedly criticized the RNC for falling under Trump’s control. “He tried to get the RNC to name him the presumptive nominee. We don’t do coronations,” she said while campaigning in South Carolina. “Think about what’s happening right now. Is that how you’re going to try and take an election?”

Totally loyal

Lara Trump married Eric Trump in 2014. She was a warmup speaker to Trump at the “Save America” rally that happened right before the Jan 6 riot at the Capitol.

Attacked from all sides

Haley’s campaign manager, Betsey Ankeny, attacked Trump’s RNC endorsements as “rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.” If Haley took power, “everyone at the RNC will be fired,” Ankeny warned. “There will be a full and complete audit of the gross misuse of funds, and there will be a formal application process to become RNC chair based on MERIT, not on back-scratching.”
