Ex-Trump administration official shot in D.C. carjacking spree dies, and Republicans are furious

Gill was the Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s (CFTC) chief operating officer during the Trump administration. The father of three was shot on January 29, and five days later, he died. The shooter was killed hours later, and the investigators believe he had a mental breakdown.

The reports say that the tragically shot attorney was parked outside the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in northwest Washington around 5:45 pm when the 28-year-old gunman, Artell Cunningham, approached him. Gill was waiting for his wife, and right before the attack, he notified her that he was outside.

Around 7 pm, the shooter tried to steal another vehicle, and minutes later, he fatally shot 35-year-old Alberto Vazquez, Jr., the father of two, and took off in his car.

The terror lasted for around 11 hours

D.C. carjackings rose for the sixth year in a row in 2023 to 959 reported incidents. Compared to 2022, the number has doubled, and Axios reported earlier that there were plans for the”real-time crime center” to monitor cameras and make officers respond more swiftly.

The lawyer also had a senior position in the CFTC during Barack Obama’s presidency. Before that, he worked as a lawyer. Former Chairman J. Christopher Giancarlo told News4, “If we achieved anything, 95% of the credit goes to Mike Gill, who’s a person that never sought credit, who never sought anything for himself.”

A right-wing activist, Laura Loomer, wrote on X, “Stolen elections have consequences. Crime in D.C. never would have gotten this bad if Trump were in office. Very sad and tragic. This didn’t need to happen. Prayers to Mike Gill’s family.”

Cunningham was arrested in 2021 for disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, obstructing, and failing to obey police orders. In 2022, he was arrested for driving an uninsured vehicle and fleeing the scene of an accident. Jeffery Carroll, the assistant chief of DC police, confirmed that despite the criminal history, he was likely going through a crisis at the time of the killings.
