Harry Dunn was one of the hundreds of Capitol police officers who defended the complex from right-wing rioters on Jan 6, 2021. On the day before the third anniversary of the insurrection, Dunn announced he would be running for Congress to block the MAGA movement.
Dunn’s Announcement
“On January 6th, I defended our democracy from insurrectionists as a Capitol Police Officer,” Dunn wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “After, President Biden honored me with the Presidential Citizens Medal.”
Dramatic Video
Dunn’s announcement video showed him walking through a dramatized recreation of the riot. As he speaks to the camera, background actors dressed as rioters cause chaos and destruction.
Singular Purpose
“Today,” Dunn wrote, “I’m running for Congress to stop Trump’s MAGA extremists & ensure it never happens again.”
Duty Called
“Some of the same people who stood behind us when we protected them,” Dunn says in the video, “went back on the floor of Congress and stood behind Trump. They voted to acquit him. And worst of all, they denied the violence and trauma that led to the death of some of my fellow officers.”
Hypocrites
Kevin McCarthy, for example, called the “violence, destruction, and chaos” of the riot “unacceptable, undemocratic, and un-American.” He then opposed the committee investigating the events.
Time For a Change
“I believe that as a Capitol Police Officer, I’ve exhausted everything that I could do in that role, in that capacity,” Dunn told CNN, “to fight for accountability, to fight for justice, to preserve our democracy, to fight for a democracy.”
Targeted by Bigots
Dunn testified about what he experienced on Jan 6 before the House Jan 6 select committee. He said it was the first time he had ever been called the N slur while wearing his uniform.
Extremists
After hearing rioters claim that “nobody voted for Joe Biden,” Dunn told the crowd that he had voted for Biden. “Am I nobody?” he asked. “You hear that, guys?” responded a woman wearing a MAGA shirt. “This n…er voted for Joe Biden!” “Boo!” the crowd jeered. “F…ing n…er!”
Dangerous Situation
According to Dunn, one of his colleagues was told by rioters, “Put your gun down, and we’ll show you what kind of n…er you really are!”
In Disbelief
“How the blank can something like this happen?” Dunn yelled. “Is this America?”
Failed Attempt
“To the rioters, the terrorists, and the insurrections of that day,” Dunn concluded: “Democracy went on that night, and still continues to exist today. Democracy is bigger than any one person, and any one party. You all tried to disrupt democracy that day, and you all failed.”
Tight Race
Dunn is running in Maryland’s 3rd Congressional district, where a comfortable majority supports Biden. However, there are already more than a dozen other primary challengers in the race, including two state senators and three state delegates.
