Doctor mocks Trump’s repeated claims about difficult “dementia screening”

Trump insists that he “aced” the cognitive test but mentioned numerous times that it was “not easy.” Professor of Medicine and Surgery Jonathan Reiner blasted Trump in one simple sentence.

All it took was one sentence

The George Washington University professor wrote on X, “If you think a dementia screening test is very difficult, you may have early dementia.” He was replying to MeidasTouch’s video with the caption, “Trump Suggests 98% of His Supporters Would Fail Cognitive Decline Test.”

Even the test creator commented

Dr. Ziad Nasreddine, who developed the test used in the White House, said in 2020, “It is supposed to be easy for someone who has no cognitive impairment.” The doctor also made headlines after Trump said at a rally, “I think it was 35… 30 questions. And let me tell you, you know, they always show you the first one: a giraffe, a tiger or a whale. ‘Which one is the whale?.”

Speaking to the Post, the Canadian neurologist Nasreddine clarified that in the three test versions, “I don’t think we have a version with a whale.” Still, the neurologist gave Trump the benefit of the doubt by suggesting the former president used a “hypothetical” to describe the test.

Trump talked about how difficult the cognitive decline test was, telling his supporters, “It’s not easy!” and suggesting that only 2 percent of rallygoers would pass it. The former president also compared himself to his uncle, an MIT professor.

Trump declared in Las Vegas, “We have the same genes, we’re smart people… We’re like racehorses, too. You know, the fast ones produce the fast ones, and the slow ones — doesn’t work out so well.” The 45th president and likely GOP nominee was talking about his uncle, Dr. John Trump, who was a professor at MIT.

“Morning Joe” co-host Joe Scarbrough and Jonathan Lemire, White House Bureau Chief for Politico, discussed Trump’s cognitive health. Lemire recalled covering Trump 15-20 years ago. He continued, “It’s very clear he’s not the same guy he was then, and that post about presidential immunity also had the great Trump tell of this era, which is when he goes to all-caps.”

“Dazed and Confused”

Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson and Scarbrough discussed Trump’s interview with Hannity. Robinson began chuckling when MSNBC displayed a chyron stating, “Dazed and Confused: Trump mixes up Biden with Obama, again.”

Haley told supporters in New Hampshire that “we can’t have someone else that we question whether they’re mentally fit to do this” after he mixed her up with Nancy Pelosi. Trump fired back by saying he feels “sharper now than I did 20 years ago.”

During a South Carolina rally, the GOP’s presidential hopeful said Trump appeared “confused” and challenged him to a debate, ” “he should have no problem getting on a debate stage with me because that’s the ultimate mental competency test for anyone running for president.”

From cognitive tests to the borders

At a recent rally, Trump jumped from the tests to the border crisis, saying, “So, now Biden is trying to guess a good thing. How do you think he’d do on a test? He might not get that first question right. So, now Biden is trying to gaslight the American public by claiming that his border disaster is Republicans’ fault.”

Colbert on Trump’s test

Stephen Colbert recently poked fun at Trump, “This man never lost sight of what matters most to voters: That he once took a cognitive test that checks for brain damage.” Colbert repeated the clip where Trump explained, “They give you six names in a row at the beginning, ‘Sir, I’m gonna give you six names.’ Good,” Trump explained. “A chair. A hat. A badge. A necklace. And a vote.”

First of all…

Colbert joked, “First of all, those aren’t names. Those are things,” Colbert said. “He also said they give you six names: Chair, hat, badge, necklace, vote. That’s only five things.” The comedian concluded, “Y’know, cognitive tests are like jazz: It’s about all the names you don’t remember.”
