We are in the middle of remodeling the bathroom at our cabin. As of the writing of this posting, the project is around 75% complete. I still have more work to do, but things are starting to come together. Here is a brief overview of the progress so far.
Costs
The average bathroom remodel as of the writing of this article will cost you about 5 to 10 percent of the value of your home. This is assuming that you hire a professional to do the work for you. Of course, this is just an average. A basic bathroom remodel will obviously cost much less than doing a luxurious remodel of a large area.
I am doing the work myself, so this is a total DIY project for me. We have a little under $1000 in material costs for the entire job. That comes in less than a fourth of the cost if I had hired the work out to a contractor. Needless to say, I’m happy with the savings so far.
DIY or Hire a Professional?
Should you attempt to tackle a bathroom remodel on your own? The answer to that question depends completely on your own abilities and desire to put in the time and effort to do the work. If you don’t want to do the work yourself, or if you don’t have the skills, then you will be hiring a professional to do the work for you.
Like anything else, you will want to figure out your budget for such a project. The sky is the limit with a bathroom. A large bathroom with high-end fixtures could run you north of $30,000. Whichever route you choose just be sure to budget accordingly for the work.
Some advantages of hiring a professional are that the work will be insured and will be done to safety code. You will have peace of mind that the work was done correctly and won’t present problems to you in the future should you sell your home.
DIY will obviously save you a lot of money, but you will need the proper tools, have some knowledge of construction, and be aware of safety and building codes.
Some Pictures
So, here are a couple of before and after pictures of our bathroom. Enjoy!
Conclusion
This has been a fun project so far, and I have only been working on it for two weekends. I figure a couple more weekends, and it will be complete. Good luck with all your home improvement projects. Whether you hire a professional or do the work yourself be sure to do your research and keep within your budget.
