Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, previously known for his progressive stance, is rebranding himself in the wake of evolving views on immigration and border security among some liberals.
From Progressive to Regular
Fetterman, who emerged victorious against Republican Dr. Mehmet Oz in the 2022 election by a margin of five points, had previously aligned himself with the progressive movement. This was evident in his support for Senator Bernie Sanders during the 2016 presidential race and in his own 2016 Senate campaign.
“Just a regular Democrat”
Recently, he’s been vocal about issues like border security and the Gaza war, stepping away from the ‘progressive’ label to identify as a ‘regular Democrat.’ He’s raised concerns about the border crisis, noting the record-breaking 300,000 migrants processed in December.
Border Security Debate
Speaking to the New York Post, Fetterman stressed, “There is a crisis. We have a crisis at our border, and it can’t be controversial that we should have a secure border. That’s larger than the population of Pittsburgh…That’s [Pennsylvania’s] second largest city—and that’s one month.”
Fetterman’s ‘Clear’ Stand
Campaigning as a progressive, Senator John Fetterman recently remarked that it’s not his stance that has changed, but that of others, highlighting the Biden administration’s awareness of the need for ‘comprehensive’ approaches to immigration.
He advocates for federal aid to cities like New York, burdened with migrant arrivals.
Questioning the Controversy
In a discussion with Jake Tapper on CNN, Fetterman questioned the controversy over securing the border, a stance he’s consistently held and which Republicans highlighted in his race against Dr. Mehmet Oz.
Immigrant Background
He referenced his wife, Gisele Barreto Fetterman’s, immigrant background from Brazil and her journey to U.S. citizenship, acknowledging her role not only as his partner but also as a key supporter in his campaign, especially during his recovery from a stroke.
Advocating for Border Security
Recently, Democratic Senator John Fetterman, in a discussion with CNN’s Jake Tapper, expressed his concern over the migration crisis, emphasizing the need for a ‘secure border.’
Confusion Over Border Debate
The 54-year-old Pennsylvania senator expressed confusion over the controversy surrounding this stance, remarking, “I honestly don’t understand why it’s controversial to say we need a secure border.”
Dual Stance
Fetterman, stressing his support for immigration, also addressed criticism from progressive circles for his pro-border security stance, asserting that one can support immigration while advocating for border security.
Between Left and Right
Recently, he has also diverged from the far-left faction of his party by expressing strong support for Israel following the Hamas attack on October 7, and advocating for stricter southern border policies, a view that some left-leaning individuals deem inhumane.
Unprecedented Migrant Encounters
In the last fiscal year, the Biden administration experienced an unprecedented number of encounters at the southern border, with at least 2.4 million migrants. This figure only accounts for the encounters with border patrol agents, not including those who evaded detection.
95,000 in Two Weeks
On average, there were about 6,575 encounters daily, indicating that approximately 95,000 undocumented migrants could enter the U.S. in just over two weeks. In December 2023 alone, over 302,000 migrant attempts to cross the southern border were documented, a first-time surge past the 300,000 mark.
Earning Conservative Praise
Fetterman’s recent statements on border security and the Middle East have garnered praise from conservative figures, including Donald Trump Jr. However, these stances seem to have impacted his popularity among young liberal voters.
Shifting Voter Sentiments
A New York Times/Siena College poll, conducted with 1,680 self-identified registered voters in Pennsylvania from January 4 to 8, reveals a shift in sentiment. Only 28 percent of voters aged 18-34 hold a favorable view of Fetterman, while 45 percent view him unfavorably. A notable 27 percent of young voters stated they hadn’t heard enough about him to decide.
