Hunter Biden testified in an impeachment investigation where he repeated that his father was not involved in his businesses but reportedly asked House GOP about Jared Kushner and alleged $2 billion.
Behind closed doors
The First Son initially refused to testify behind closed doors, but after months of negotiations, the deals were made. House Oversight Chairman James Comer, a Kentucky Republican, confirmed that the next step would be a public hearing with Hunter Biden.
“Political charade”
Biden called the GOP-led impeachment inquiry into President Biden a “political charade” and repeated that he “never” involved his father in his businesses. The six-hour hearing transcript will be available soon. However, while Democrats said Biden’s son was the “nail in the coffin” into the impeachment investigation, Comer insisted there were “discrepancies.”
Hunter Biden’s opening statement
The First Son released his opening statement before going behind closed doors. It said in part, “For more than a year, your Committees have hunted me in your partisan political pursuit of my dad.” Biden continued, “You have trafficked in innuendo, distortion, and sensationalism — all the while ignoring the clear and convincing evidence staring you in the face.”
Biden calls out House GOP
Hunter Biden’s statement added, “You do not have evidence to support the baseless and MAGA-motivated conspiracies about my father because there isn’t any.” He said in conclusion, “You have wasted valuable time and resources attacking my family and me for your own political gain when you should be fixing the real problems in this country that desperately need your attention.”
Curious Biden
Goldman, a New York Democrat, also told reporters that Biden presented a difference “between what he has done in a business world with independent businessmen, versus foreign governments, which he did not do any business with—unlike Jared Kushner.” Biden also reportedly accused the GOP of “double standards” and asked, “How come they’re not curious about the $2 billion Jared Kushner got from the Saudis?”
“Embarrassing spectacle”
Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, told CNN, “He has emphatically and repeatedly underscored to the Republicans that his father was not involved in any way in his businesses, did not profit from his businesses, and Hunter neither asked him for any official favors nor received any official favors from Joe Biden.” He described the hearing as “a rather embarrassing spectacle where the Republicans continued to belabor completely trivial points.”
Raskin on Biden’s frustration
Raskin and Goldman agreed that inserting Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, was “powerful.” Raskin also shared, “I think [Hunter Biden] may be a little bit frustrated by some of the double standards relating to Jared Kushner and money that has been just openly pocketed by Donald Trump in office and Jared Kushner, of course, brought back $2 billion from Saudi Arabia.”
Comparing the hearing to a boxing match
Eric Swalwell, a Democratic representative from California, told reporters, “A referee would stop the fight if this were a boxing match.” Dan Goldman said during a break that Biden gave “detailed and clear explanations.”
Goldman continued
“Not only did they were they unable to show any connection between Hunter Biden’s business and President Biden, but Hunter Biden gave very detailed and clear explanations as to what his arm’s length business transactions were with private parties in foreign countries who are investors and business people like many people would have,” Goldman added.
Republicans on Biden’s testimony
Nancy Mace, a South Carolina Republican, called the President’s son “defiant and dishonest,” adding that some answers were “in direct conflict with other witnesses.” Marjorie Taylor Greene shared on X, “While Hunter Biden hides behind claims of addiction, the evidence is clear – he cashed in on his father’s name to make millions in Ukraine and China.”
Biden’s attorney slammed House GOP
The lawyer for Hunter Biden, Abbe Lowell, criticized Republicans for spending too much time questioning his addiction. Lowell told reporters, “After seven hours of questions, the Republican majority ended the day where they started. They have produced no evidence that would do anything to support the notion that there were any financial transactions that Hunter had with his father. Period. It seems to me that the Republican members wanted to spend more time talking about my client’s addiction.”
Biden “exhausted the Republicans”
Following the deposition, Swalwell commented that Biden “exhausted the Republicans” and said, “I saw cruelty, and in a lot of the ways the questions were asked, I saw unnecessary delving into personal life matters that had nothing to do with anything being alleged,” Swalwell said. “And he weathered it all. I just wished the public could have seen it.”
