A psychiatrist revealed that Congress members had made plans to remove Donald Trump from office, citing his poor mental health.
Trump’s Mental Health Concerns
Dr. Bandy Lee, a former Yale psychiatrist and editor of ‘The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump,’ a book featuring essays from 27 mental health professionals, revealed that these Congress members approached her expressing worries about Trump’s mental state.
A Possible Trump Exit
She mentioned discussions around potentially using impeachment and the 25th Amendment, which allows for the removal of a president deemed unable to fulfill their duties, including due to mental incapacity.
Plan for Trump’s Mental Evaluation
“No intervention was made, but an intervention came close. Congress members got in touch in late 2017, I met with more than 50 congress members who were ready to intervene,” Dr. Lee explained. “They said to us if we did our part in educating the public medically, we can do our part politically. And they were serious about that.
“The problem was that the American Psychiatric Association had changed its ethical guidelines with the Trump presidency.”
Ethical Dilemmas in Diagnosis
Dr. Lee mentioned that the American Psychiatric Association expressed concerns regarding the Goldwater Rule, which prohibits psychiatrists from making public speculations about the mental health of public figures without a personal evaluation.
Impeachment on Health Grounds
When asked if Congress members considered impeaching Trump based on health issues, Dr. Lee confirmed, “Yes, at the time the 25th Amendment was very actively discussed. It turned out that cabinet members and those close to Trump were thinking about the 25th Amendment.”
Congress on Trump’s Health
She added, “Behind the scenes, Congress members were very actively discussing this too. The drafter of the 25th Amendment, John Feerick, emphasized that the 25th Amendment was supposed to be initiated by data, including medical data.”
Trump’s Fitness for Office
“Impeachment was also discussed. This was supposed to be the solution for all the problematic behavior in office, including mental impairment.” Dr. Lee said, “When someone does not have the capacity to do the role, or is dangerous, they should be evaluated. Even if they don’t agree.”
Trump’s Poll Surge
Following his remarkable early December victory in Iowa, former President Donald Trump is currently leading in the race and has a high chance of clinching the Republican Party nomination.
He’s also ahead of President Joe Biden in polls.
The Odds of Trump’s Impeachment
Dr. Lee, however, suggests that if Trump made a White House comeback, it’s improbable that there will be another attempt to impeach him on health grounds.
She explains, “There will be less chance of this happening. One misconception is that the more egregious Trump’s actions become, the more the public will realize he is not suitable for office.”
Trump’s Follower Mindset
“The opposite is true. The damage he has done in the US and around the globe is so catastrophic, and the mind goes into even further denial. That is why his followers are thinking his is god-ordained. This kind of thinking does not come about with a normal, healthy presidency,” she further argued.
“My concern and despair is that the Democrats won’t reverse his destructiveness, they actually in large part normalized what was terribly abnormal.”
Physical and Cognitive Tests
Amidst growing doubts about the GOP frontrunner’s mental fitness for leading the United States, Donald Trump, at a campaign event in Iowa last year, discussed undergoing a physical and cognitive assessment.
‘I aced it’
“I took a physical and I passed with flying colors,” the ex-President shared. “And I took a cognitive exam. I said ‘Doctor, give me anything you want, I want to take it.’” Trump suggested that presidential candidates should be mandated to take cognitive exams, criticizing President Biden by claiming he couldn’t pass such a test.
“But, I took a cognitive exam, and I aced it,” he added.
GOP’s Push for Cognitive Exams
A number of Republicans, including GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley, have been advocating for mandatory tests to assess mental sharpness. “In the America I see, the permanent politician will finally retire,” Haley said at a campaign rally last year.
“We’ll have term limits for Congress and mandatory mental competency tests for politicians over 75 years old.”
