Cheney Urges Johnson to Introduce Ukraine Aid Bill Even “If He Has To Lose His Speakership”

Liz Cheney spoke on CNN’s State of the Union, where she encouraged House Speaker Johnson to introduce the bill that would help Ukraine fight for freedom, even if that meant losing speakership.

Cheney spoke to Jake Tapper, who suggested that if Jonhson introduced the bill, he could be ousted. Former Wyoming representative Cheney responded, “Right, and what I would say to that is, you know, he ought to understand that it is worth it if he has to lose his Speakership in order to make sure that freedom survives in order to make sure that the United States of America continues to play its leadership role in the world.”

Cheney continued by saying that people need to understand what’s happening to Ukraine, “you got to read about the slaughter that’s going on.” She explained, “You got to understand that we are at a turning point in the history not just of this nation but of the world.”

The Never Trump Republican reminded Johnson, “And again, he’s gonna have to explain to future generations to his kids to his grandkids, whether or not he did what was right, whether or not he was a force for good and aided the cause of freedom, or whether he continued down this path of cowardice and doing what Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin want him to do.”

The former lawmaker and the daughter of former Vice President of the United States, Dick Cheney, told Tapper she hasn’t ruled out running for president, explaining, “I haven’t made any decisions about it yet, but I’m going to do whatever is necessary to defeat Donald Trump.”

While speaking at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, Cheney said it would be crucial to elect people who would guard the Constitution, adding, “I haven’t made a decision yet about what I’m going to do. We have a lot of excellent candidates. We have a lot of bad candidates too. So, I’ll make a decision about that in the coming months.”

Cheney signaled to Johnson this could be his Moses moment

Cheney further told Tapper that Johnson “has said, and I take him at his word, that he believes that God has told him that he’s called to be Moses, and I think Mike Johnson ought to look at whether or not this is actually that moment.”

Following the death of the top opposition leader in Russia, Alexei Navalny, Cheney took to X to blast Tucker Carlson, who recently interviewed Russian President Putin. Cheney wrote, “This is what Putin’s Russia is, @TuckerCarlson. And you are Putin’s useful idiot. Same with you⁦, @JDVance1, and other Putin-wing Republicans who are working to defeat Ukraine in its struggle for freedom.”

Ohio Senator JD Vance said, “The problem in Ukraine … is that there’s no clear endpoint,” adding that the U.S. doesn’t make enough weapons to support wars in eastern Europe, the Middle East, and “potentially a contingency in East Asia.”

“I think what’s reasonable to accomplish is some negotiated peace,” Vance said, adding that Russia, Ukraine, Europe, and the U.S. all have the motivation to come to the table now and that the two-year-old war will eventually end in a negotiated peace. Ricarda Lang, a German politician, reminded him that Putin had continually shown “that he had no interest in peace at the moment.”

Johnson called for a recess

In the middle of the chaos, the House Speaker adjourned the House for a two-week recess. The Louisiana Republican stated, “The mandate of national security supplemental legislation was to secure America’s own border before sending additional foreign aid around the world.” But this begs the question of why the bipartisan border bill was killed.

Johnson is leading one of the smallest House majorities in history, 219 to 213, after Democrat Tom Suozzi’s win in a New York special election. He took the seat after defeating Republican Mazi Pilip after George Santos was expelled last year.

GOP Chair believes that Johnson will have to bring the vote to the floor

The GOP chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Michael McCaul from Texas, said, “I don’t see any way of getting out of Israel, Indo-Pacific, and eventually Ukraine coming to the floor. He’s either going to have to do it, put it on the floor himself, or it’s going to be by virtue of a discharge petition, which is a complete evisceration of his power because it basically says we’re going to do this without the Speaker being in charge.”
