During a Bay Area fundraiser, President Biden talked to Katie Couric and warned that Trump plans to jail some journalists while promoting “political violence.”
Biden’s warning
“Two of your former colleagues, not at the same network, personally told me if he wins, they will have to leave the country because he’s threatened to put them in jail,” Biden told Couric. Since Couric worked for NBC, ABC, CBS, and CNN, it is hard to play a guessing game.
The President’s media presence
Biden, who has been criticized for his lack of communication with journalists, stated, according to reports, “I’m not the gift of all presidents, but I’m sure as hell better than the last guy.” The President is known as a “gaffe machine.” Despite his mistakes, now and decades ago, the Philadelphia Inquirer cited a group of politicos who saw him as “with the possible exception of Jesse Jackson, the most spellbinding orator in the Democratic Party.”
The President referenced the January 6 violence
According to reports, the 46th president said about Trump, “He embraces political violence. No president since the Civil War has done that. Embrace it. Encourage it.” Biden continued, “He calls them patriots, saying if he gets elected, he’s going to pardon them. They killed cops. They killed people.”
The President is reportedly quite candid during private events
Biden talked while at the home of Robert Klein, a developer who hosted the fundraising event. The President mentioned that the border was in “chaos” and called Russian President Putin a “crazy SOB.”
The President’s words echoed among journalists
In his column, Brian Karem from Salon wrote that both sides mistreat freedom of speech: “Those in power do not want us to inform everyone else about what is going on. To do so would be to risk losing control over the masses.” While he does not trust politicians, he trusts Trump.
Biden was right
Karem’s conclusion was: “Biden was right to point out that Trump wants to jail reporters. Trump supporters don’t care. But I’ve eaten Texas jail food, so I do.”
But Trump claims to be a “proud political dissident”
During the Conservative Political Action Conference in Maryland, Trump declared himself to be a “proud political dissident.” He stated, “A vote for Trump is your ticket back to freedom, it’s your passport out of tyranny, and it’s your only escape from Joe Biden and his gang’s fast track to hell.”
Navalny’s death as a warning
Biden declared that “Putin is responsible for Navalny’s death” and met with Navalny’s wife, Yulia, and daughter, Dasha. Alexei Navalny was Putin’s top opponent, and he died suddenly while in jail. Karem mentioned him in his column as “the most extreme example of what can occur when members of the government don’t respect free speech.”
Trump compared himself to Navalny
Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, “The sudden death of Alexei Navalny has made me more and more aware of what is happening in our Country.” He continued, “It is a slow, steady progression, with CROOKED, Radical Left Politicians, Prosecutors, and Judges leading us down a path to destruction. Open Borders, Rigged Elections, and Grossly Unfair Courtroom Decisions are DESTROYING AMERICA. WE ARE A NATION IN DECLINE, A FAILING NATION! MAGA2024.”
Yet, no one in his circle wants to comment
Marjorie Taylor Greene was asked about Navalny’s death during a campaign stop for Trump in Greenville, South Carolina, NBC News reported. When pressed to comment, she said, “I really could care less.” Lara Trump, Trump’s daughter-in-law and potential second in command in RNC, said she doesn’t “know enough to comment about that.”
Haley blasted Trump
“Donald Trump could have condemned Vladimir Putin for being a murderous thug,” Haley posted on X, adding, “Trump could have praised Navalny’s courage. Instead, he stole a page from liberals’ playbook, denouncing America and comparing our country to Russia.”
But it is not all on Trump
As Karem noted in Salon, “The fate of Julian Assange is also a reminder that it isn’t just Trump who is an enemy of the free press.” The columnist described that the DOJ could drop charges because his crime was ” publishing classified government documents based on the idea that the public had a right to know.” Perhaps people are turning away from the media and into conspiracy theories because journalists and opponents are never truly safe.
