Georgia Governor Brian Kemp is under pressure to start an investigation into Fulton County DA Fani Willis following allegations that she had an “improper, clandestine personal relationship” with a prosecutor, Nathan Wade, hired in the case against Trump and 18 others.
Marjorie Taylor Greene request an inquiry
Georgia Republican and vocal Trump supporter filed “a criminal referral requesting an immediate investigation into Fani Willis and her alleged secret boyfriend, Nathan Wade, to Governor Brian Kemp and AG Chris Carr,” she wrote on X.
Greene’s conclusion
The Republican firebrand continued, “Georgians are sick and tired of Fani using her office to go after Joe Biden’s top political opponent rather than going after real crime in Georgia.”
The accusations
Greene previously suggested that Willis and Wade holidayed together and alleged he was paid $700,000 from District Attorney Willis’s official funds. The unconfirmed rumors were also indicated by Trump’s co-defendant, Michael Roman, a former White House aide who served as the director of Trump’s election-day operations.
Roman’s attorney’s motion
In a motion, a lawyer for Roman, Ashleigh Merchant, wrote, “Admittedly, this is a bold allegation considering it is directed to one of the most powerful people in the State of Georgia, the Fulton County District Attorney. Nevertheless, the district attorney’s fame and power do not change the fact that she decided to appoint as the special prosecutor a person with whom she had a personal relationship and who is now leading the day-to-day prosecution of this case.”
“Sources claim”
The motion adds, “Sources close to both the special prosecutor and the district attorney have confirmed they had an ongoing, personal relationship during the pendency of the special prosecutor’s divorce proceedings.”
Letter to Kemp
Greene wrote a letter to Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and AG Chris Carr insisting on an investigation due to allegations that “Willis “illegally hired her secret boyfriend” to work on an “unprecedented, complex, and partisan” investigation into Trump and his co-defendants.
Greene against Willis
The letter reads, “This is part of Fani Willis’ unlawful partisan pattern, through her words and deeds, to illegally politicize and weaponize her public office to wage lawfare against President Trump for the purpose of interfering in the 2024 presidential election.” Greene added, “we are learning she has allegedly enriched her secret boyfriend and herself during this process.”
Kemp does not see eye to eye with Trump
The Georgia Republican and Governor does not believe Trump’s claims of stolen elections. He wrote on X, “For nearly three years now, anyone with evidence of fraud has failed to come forward — under oath — and prove anything in a court of law. Our elections in Georgia are secure, accessible, and fair and will continue to be as long as I am Governor.”
Under pressure
Greene is not the only right-wing person who requested an ingestion by Kemp. Mike Davis, ex-chief counsel for nominations to former Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, wrote on X, “Greene’s criminal referral to Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr could be the silver bullet ending Fani Willis’ case against Trump. The ball’s in your court, Kemp and Carr. You can’t dodge this one.”
The case against Trump stays
Trial attorney Bernard Alexander told Newsweek that even if the relationship was confirmed, the case against Trump “should not collapse.” He elaborated that allegations of election interference are “unrelated to the presumed existence of a relationship between Willis and Wade and the actual or potential conflict of interest created.”
Sticking to facts
The attorney concluded, “The merits and viability of the Georgia election interference case itself should remain intact, based on the objective facts and legal analysis that supported the building blocks for determining that the prosecution of the case was appropriate.”
Wade’s divorce
CNN broke the story that Wade’s divorce from Joycelyn Wade began in 2021 and reported that Willis received a witness subpoena to appear at a deposition.
Roman’s Georgia charges
Roman is facing seven charges related to the alleged interference in Georgia’s 2020 presidential election, including “violating the Georgia RICO Act, conspiracy to impersonate a public officer, conspiracy to commit forgery in the first degree, and conspiracy to commit false statements and writing.”
