Conservative circles have expressed their disappointment in Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett after she sided with the White House in a border security vote. This decision marks a somewhat unexpected victory for the Democratic president, given the Supreme Court’s conservative lean.
Surprising Move
This Monday, the Supreme Court, in a close 5-4 decision, supported the request to overturn an October ruling from the Fifth Circuit. This ruling had previously stopped President Biden’s plan to have federal agents remove razor wire along the Texas border.
A Tight Supreme Court Vot
Barrett, aligning with Chief Justice John Roberts and the court’s liberal justices – Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson – voted to approve the request to vacate. Meanwhile, conservative Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, and Brett Kavanaugh opposed.
A Conservative Betrayal?
Barrett’s decision, especially since her 2020 appointment by former President Donald Trump after Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s passing, has sparked considerable debate among conservatives on platforms like X, formerly known as Twitter.
Legal Expert Reacts
Conservative lawyer Marina Medvin wrote, “Wow. SCOTUS Justices Roberts and Barrett sided with the left wing and have allowed Biden’s federal officers to continue removing the border fencing erected by the state of Texas while the case is pending. Thomas, Alito, Kavanaugh, and Gorsuch would have prevented the feds from doing so.”
Vote Controversy
Greg Price from the State Freedom Caucus Network remarked, “The Supreme Court just ruled 5-4 that the Biden admin can remove physical barriers Texas put at their border to stop the invasion. Barrett and Roberts voted with the libs.”
Barrett’s ‘Nightmare’ Vote
Conservative platform Citizen Free Press posted, “Amy Coney Barrett just voted in favor of allowing Biden’s federal border agents to dismantle razor fencing set up by Texas agents to stop illegals immigrants entering America The vote was 5-4. She was the deciding vote. What a nightmare.”
‘What an upside down world’
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ official account weighed in on the Supreme Court ruling, though it didn’t specifically mention Barrett or Roberts, posting, “Texas is trying to enforce our laws and uphold our sovereignty while the federal government is disregarding the law and ignoring its responsibility to protect our borders.”
“What an upside down world.”
Abbott’s Policy Under Fire
Beto O’Rourke, the former Democratic Representative, voiced his opinion on X about the border situation, stating, “Abbott’s razor wire — deployed under the water line and in the path of those trying to rescue drowning migrants — has done nothing to stop illegal crossings. It also happens to be 100% illegal under the Constitution.”
Vowing to Fight SCOTUS Ruling
Texas Governor Greg Abbott vowed to continue the legal fight after a recent court ruling. He had previously ordered miles of concertina wire along high-migrant traffic areas of the Texas-Mexico border. Many migrants in these areas are asylum seekers, not attempting to enter the U.S. covertly.
The recent ruling permits Border Patrol agents to cut through the wire if necessary.
The Razor Wire Debate
Abbott’s spokesperson, Andrew Mahaleris, stated, “The Biden Administration has repeatedly cut wire that Texas installed to stop illegal crossings, opening the floodgates to illegal immigrants.”
Effective or Not?
“The absence of razor wire and other deterrence strategies encourages migrants to make unsafe and illegal crossings between ports of entry, while making the job of Texas National Guard soldiers and DPS troopers more dangerous and difficult,” Mahaleris continued.
Miles of Wire
Miles of concertina wire, layered in several cities and regions, mark the Texas-Mexico border, stretching 1,254 miles. This contentious border issue reached a peak with the SCOTUS ruling on an emergency appeal by the Biden Administration, originating from a dispute in Eagle Pass.
Protecting Texas?
Ordered by Republican Governor Greg Abbott, Texas soldiers on January 10 enclosed Shelby Park with razor wire and other barriers, despite it being city-owned land in Eagle Pass. Governor Abbott justified this action, stating it aimed to stop the unprecedented influx of illegal immigrant entries at Shelby Park in recent times.
Eagle Pass Overwhelmed
In the week leading up to Christmas, over 22,000 asylum-seeking migrants crossed the river into Shelby Park, overwhelming Eagle Pass, a city with a mere 28,000 residents. This surge exerted enormous pressure on local resources, incurring significant daily expenses for taxpayers.
