The Republicans have been in a continuous disagreement with the Biden administration over border policies since the president assumed office in January 2021. Abbott has independently initiated measures to prevent migrants from entering, including the installation of razor-wire and floating barriers equipped with serrated discs.

Despite a Supreme Court decision allowing border agents to remove the wire, Texas has remained firm in not permitting federal agents to do so in the crucial border region of Shelby Park in Eagle Pass, Texas.

The statement further highlighted,  “We do it in part because the Biden Administration is refusing to enforce immigration laws already on the books and is illegally allowing mass parole across America of migrants who entered our country illegally.”

Federal Crime of Illegal Entry

Abbott has criticized the White House for its failure to prosecute “immigrants for the federal crime of illegal entry.” The Biden administration counters this by pointing out the challenges posed by a backlog in the system and the legal protections afforded to asylum seekers.

The Biden administration contends, “The practical result of this growing backlog is that those deserving of protection may have to wait years for their claims to be granted, while individuals who are ultimately found not to merit protection may spend years in the United States before being issued a final order of removal.”

The Razor Wire Debate Intensifies

The ongoing dispute between the Biden administration and Governor Greg Abbott over border issues persists. A major point of contention is the installation of razor wire along the borderlands, aimed at preventing migrant crossings.

This development comes amid the continuing migrant crisis along the southern border.

In March 2021, Abbott initiated Operation Lone Star, an extensive campaign aimed at curtailing illegal immigration along the Texas border. The Biden administration, however, contends that the barriers erected by Texas as part of this operation encroach upon federal jurisdiction, as border enforcement is traditionally a federal responsibility.
