UAW President Fain Rebukes Trump’s “Dope” Remark, Labels it a “Divide-and-Conquer” Tactic, Endorses Biden for Pro-Union Stance

Shawn Fain, President of the United Auto Workers (UAW), fired back at former President Trump on Tuesday’s “dope” comment due to his endorsement of President Biden.

When asked about Trump’s recent comments on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Fain reaffirmed his support for Biden and highlighted the clear distinction between Biden’s and Trump’s historical support for unions and the working class.

Fain emphasized the unprecedented nature of Biden’s engagement with the working class, stating, “I mean, you have, for the first time in history, a sitting U.S. president joining working-class people, joining the workers on the picket line, standing up with them.”

He continued, “And you had Donald Trump, who claims he supports the workers, who calls one of his business owner buddies in a non-union factory, and he goes to this non-union factory and has a rally claiming that he’s there for the union workers and the striking workers.”

The UAW president accused Trump of employing a “rope-a-dope” tactic, aiming to distract the public while undermining workers’ interests.

“It’s the divide-and-conquer tactic, and that’s what’s worked for the billionaire class and the corporate class forever,” Fain remarked.

Last week, Fain endorsed President Biden’s reelection campaign. This endorsement from the 400,000-member UAW marked a pivotal moment in Biden’s reelection campaign, representing a significant step forward as he endeavors to secure the support of working-class Americans.

Support After Deliberation

The UAW’s formal endorsement of Biden’s reelection campaign came after some deliberation, given concerns about the impact of the Biden administration’s electric vehicles (EV) might result in the loss of jobs within the auto industry.

Blue-Collar Outreach

Meanwhile, Trump has been actively working to gain support from blue-collar workers as he shifts his focus toward a probable rematch with Biden in the upcoming fall election.

Trump said, “Get rid of this dope [Fain] & vote for DJT. I will bring the Automobile Industry back to our Country.”

During his MSNBC appearance on Tuesday, Fain escalated his critique of Trump, portraying him as a representative of the “billionaire class.”

Fain scrutinized the 2017 tax reform passed under Trump, asserting that it provided only “minuscule benefits” to the working class. He also accused Trump of advocating for cuts to social welfare programs.

Concluding his remarks, Fain called on the labor movement to lead the fight against inequality, urging members to focus on facts rather than fiction.

“Gross Inequality”

“There is gross inequality with the few at the top, and everyone else at the bottom. We have to look at facts, not fiction, not alternative facts or lies, as Trump likes to talk about, real facts. And the facts are very clear,” Fain asserted.
