Trump’s Inner Circle Concerned About His Cognitive State and Suitability for a White House Return

The saying goes that one shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Those who have thoroughly explored the “book of Trump” have ended up questioning his mental well-being.

Resurfacing Mental Health Questions

During his appearance on “The Reidout,” journalist Jonathan Karl explored the former president and front-runner’s possibility of a 2025 White House return,  based on analyses from his ex-senior cabinet officials.

Concerns from Trump’s Inner Circle

According to Karl, behaviors exhibited by the 77-year-old former president have raised concerns about his mental health among those closest to him. He told host Joy Reid, “People who have raised questions about whether or not he’s fully there mentally have been the people closest to him.”

People close to Trump have expressed concerns about potential issues facing America if the Republican candidate wins, citing doubts about his mental acuity. Karl added, “The people who have raised the alarms about what it could be if he comes back are the people closest to him.”

Legal Woes Threaten Trump’s Comeback

Trump’s behavior during the Capitol attack on Jan. 6 and the legal charges that followed could jeopardize his chances of a White House comeback, potentially diminishing his voter support.

During a ‘Save America’ rally at the Ellipse on January 6, starting at noon, Trump delivered a speech repeating claims about election irregularities and declared, “If you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore.”

Karl, author of “Front Row at the Trump Show,”  echoes the sentiment that Trump’s actions on that day raise doubts about his ability to lead America if elected.

Harvard Expert Questions Trump’s Behavior

In a New York Times article, Leonard L. Glass, an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, offered his insights on why Trump behaves in a manner that attracts a fair share of criticism and raises numerous questions.

In “The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump,” a 2017 book by Glass and fellow mental health professionals, Trump’s inability to apologize, acknowledge errors, or consider his part in his ongoing troubles is cited as a key reason he’s unfit for high office.

Trump’s insistence on always being right, not learning from mistakes, and prioritizing his own fragile ego over national security is deeply problematic and concerning, according to mental health experts. In his own mind, he’s always the one wronged, never accepting responsibility for contributing to his own troubles.

Trump Compared to Child: “Primitive” and “Regressive”

Priscilla F. Kauff, a clinical professor of psychology in psychiatry at Weill Medical College, offers another perspective on Trump’s actions. She compares his protection of transitional objects (like the documents) to a child’s reaction to losing a cherished stuffed animal, marked by immediate anxiety and rage, followed by desperate efforts to regain it.

She suggests that Trump’s behavior might be best understood as “primitive” and “regressive.”

Reconsidering “Mental Illness” Label

In a more optimistic outlook on Trump’s behavioral motives, American psychiatrist Allen J. Frances stated that labeling Trump’s behavior as “mental illness” unjustly stigmatizes the genuinely mentally ill, overlooks his significant cleverness, and misguides the nation’s strategies for preventing future harm.

Mental Illness ≠ Incompetence

Frances further asserted that within the heated discussion over Trump’s mental health lies a harmful and misguided belief that mental illness inherently disqualifies a person from high-level leadership roles.

He pointed out that if this were true, historical figures like Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill would have been sidelined due to their struggles with depression

At the end of the day, this is not a tale of a former president’s mental health, but rather of the worries about mental health that prominent figures and mental health experts have voiced about a man who is undeniably the Republican Party’s leader and the leading GOP candidate for 2024.

What this means for America’s future is yet to be determined.
