Trump Slams UAW President for Backing Biden, Claims Ignorance in Auto Industry Vision

Former President Donald Trump harshly criticized United Auto Workers (UAW) President Shawn Fain on Sunday, following Fain’s endorsement of President Joe Biden.

Trump, via a post on Truth Social on Sunday, expressed his disapproval of Fain’s support for Biden, asserting that the union leader lacks an understanding of the automotive industry’s future.

Trump labeled Fain as a “STIFF,” accusing him of handing over the automobile industry to China.

The former president said, “[Fain] bought into Biden’s ‘vision’ of all Electric Vehicles, which require far fewer workers to make each car but, more importantly, are not wanted in large numbers by the consumer, and will ALL be made in China.”

Trump emphasized his preference for manufacturing all types of cars in the USA, using tariffs and other measures to incentivize foreign companies to build plants domestically.

He accused Fain of ignorance in these matters, urging for his removal and supporting Trump’s return to power to revitalize the American automobile industry.

Fain’s Support for Biden

Fain, in a Sunday interview with CBS News’s “Face the Nation,” took several shots at Trump. Referring to the union’s endorsement of Biden, he highlighted the president’s support for the UAW, especially during their recent strike against the major three automakers.

During the UAW’s six-week strike against Detroit automakers last fall, Biden made a bold move by appearing on the picket line.

Supporting Trump Unthinkable

Fain said that he “can’t fathom any union supporting Trump.”

He praised Biden for his consistent support of the working class and criticized Trump for representing billionaire interests.

The union president said, “Joe Biden has a history of serving others, and serving the working class, and fighting for the working class, standing with the working class.”

He continued, “Donald Trump has a history of serving himself and standing for the billionaire class. And that’s contrary to everything that working-class people stand for.”

Endorsement and “Scab” Remark

Last week, the union officially endorsed Biden’s reelection campaign, with Fain referring to Trump as a “scab” during that announcement.

The UAW’s formal endorsement of Biden’s reelection campaign came after some deliberation, given concerns about the impact of the Biden administration’s electric vehicles (EV) might result in the loss of jobs within the auto industry.

Fain emphasized the UAW’s commitment to environmental and working-class issues, expressing confidence in the security provided by the union’s new contract.

Trump’s Critique of EV Policies

Trump has been vocal in his criticism of the Biden administration’s EV policies, asserting that they could lead to the demise of Michigan’s auto industry. He has repeatedly targeted these policies on the campaign trail.

In reaction to Trump’s statements, the Biden-Harris campaign issued a retort on Sunday, taking a dig at the former president by referencing Fain’s “scab” comment.
