Top Trump’s Allies Are Reportedly Struggling With Rising Legal Bills

Three major Trump allies — Steve Bannon, Rudy Giuliani, and Mike Lindell — are reportedly straining under the weight of massive legal bills. The mounting debts underscore the severity of their legal issues.

Steve Bannon is the infamous ex-advisor of former President Donald Trump. Though he was pushed out of the White House early into Trump’s first term, he remains a staunch ally.

Once lauded as “America’s Mayor,” Giuliani is now facing the music for attempting to help Trump overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Mike Lindell is the millionaire CEO of MyPillow, an American pillow manufacturer. He’s facing hefty defamation lawsuits from the manufacturers of voting machines, which he targeted as part of his efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Bannon faces a number of charges. He has a court date in May, and a pending four-month jail sentence was delivered because he refused to obey a subpoena from the group looking into the Jan. 6 insurrection.

Guliani’s charges

Guliani is part of the Georgia RICO charges, charged with a conspiracy to overturn Trump’s loss in the state. He also owes money in Georgia’s defamation case against two election workers.

Lindell is facing $2 billion in defamation lawsuits from Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic. The two companies made the voting machines that Lindell falsely accused of being part of the conspiracy to rig the election against Trump.

Despite continuing to run his podcast, The War Room, Bannon is apparently struggling to keep up with legal fees. One of his top lawyers, Robert Costello, has dropped Bannon as a client and filed a claim for $480,000 in unpaid fees.

Costello and his firm also dropped Guliani, filing a claim for $1.4 million in unpaid fees from the disgraced former lawyer. In 2021, author Michael Wolff wrote that Guliani was “cast out” by the Trump family, with Trump “annoyed” that his former lawyer “tried to get paid for his election challenge work.” However, Trump has since hosted a fundraiser for Guliani.

In October, the Minneapolis law firm representing Lindell in his billion-dollar battle asked a court to be allowed to stop representing the CEO. The firm pointed out that Lindell owed it millions of dollars in unpaid legal fees.

Things are looking worse and worse for Guliani, even outside of his money troubles. Three lawyers who worked with him on the attempt to overturn Trump’s loss in Georgia have pled guilty and agreed to cooperate with the prosecution.

No way out for Rudy?

“As expected, the dominoes have started to fall in Georgia,” said Paul Pelletier, once the acting chief of fraud at the Department of Justice. “Rudy too may want to plead and cooperate to reduce his exposure, but no prosecutor in their right mind would use him as a cooperating witness. There’s simply no way to undo the entrenched legacy of his outlandish behavior.”

However, a former US attorney argued Guliani still has a chance. “It may not be in Guliani’s DNA to admit wrongdoing, but now would be the time to pursue a deal … if he is willing to plead guilty.”

The problems keep piling up

To make matters worse for Guliani, he’s been targeted by Smartmatic, which charged him with coming up with “excuse after excuse” to avoid handing over evidence related to the defamation lawsuit aimed at those who spread lies about the 2020 election results. In August, Guliani was also deemed liable for defamatory comments he made about election workers in the state.

The battle continues

As the charges keep on coming and the costs of fighting justice continue to mount ever higher, it seems more and more likely that at least one of these three key Trump allies will fold. That would be yet another blow to Trump, who is fighting multiple cases himself.
