Trudeau Says Canada Is Preparing for Second Trump Term, Brands It As “Uncertainty”

On Tuesday, as polls opened in New Hampshire, Justin Trudeau told Cabinet ministers and allies that Canada should prepare for the chaos that another Trump presidency would bring.

Trudeau was at a retreat in Montreal, accompanied by Canada’s ambassador to the US and a panel of experts. The group was there to discuss how Canada should prepare for another Trump term.

“We made it through the challenges represented by the Trump administration seven years ago,” Trudeau told the group. “We put forward the fact that Canada and the US do best when we do it together.”

Focus on the good

“What works with all American presidents,” Trudeau told those gathered, “is to demonstrate [that] what is good for Canada is also good for the United States and vice versa. The integration of our economies, the partnerships we have in so many different areas end up being beneficial on both sides of the border.”

Heavy reliance

Exports account for roughly one-third of Canada’s economy, and over 75% of those exports go to the US. Any threat to Canada’s trade is therefore a serious danger to its economic health.

Trump attempted to undo the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA, which promotes free trade between Canada, the US, and Mexico. The three countries eventually reached an agreement.

Adding costs

Trump also threatened to add a hefty 25% tariff on automobile imports. In 2022, trade between Canada and the US totaled roughly $890 billion.

“Whether it was [Trump’s] attacks on farmers across Canada, whether it was his attacks on steel and aluminum workers, or whether it was his determination to tear up the free trade agreement with Mexico and Canada, we were able to stand strong,” Trudeau said. “That was difficult.”

Fear of the unknown

Trump “represents uncertainty,” Trudeau said. “We don’t know exactly what he is going to do.”

Border movement

About 400,000 people cross the border between the US and Canada every day. Some 800,000 Canadians live in the US.

According to NBC News, Trump and other Republican presidential candidates have targeted the northern border. Trump described it as “not so hot,” while Haley pledged to go as far as building a wall to stop illegal crossings across the world’s longest international border.

In 2023, border patrol recorded about 189,000 apprehensions along the northern border. While that’s a fraction of the 2.4 million at the southern border, it’s many times more than the 27,000 apprehensions recorded along the northern border in 2021.
