Governor Greg Abbott of Texas declared on Friday that the state is set to establish a large military base in Eagle Pass, a city on the border.
Major Military Expansion
This forward operating base, covering 80 acres, will house up to 2,300 soldiers and represents the most significant military effort by Texas to control illegal immigration from Mexico.
A New Chapter in Border Security
Although Texas has been deploying National Guard troops and state police along the border since 2021, this new base represents a substantial expansion of law enforcement infrastructure in the region.
It also underscores Texas’ determination to assume a security role traditionally held by the federal government.
Efficiency and Effectiveness
“This will increase the ability for a larger number of Texas military department personnel in Eagle Pass to operate more effectively and more efficiently,” stated Governer Abbott, surrounded by armed National Guard members, emphasizing that the base will concentrate a significant military presence in a strategically important location.
Base Construction Cost
Governor Abbott did not disclose the cost of constructing the new base in his Friday announcement, but he assured that the expense would be “minimal” compared to the current costs of accommodating troops deployed along the border.
Troop Amenities
The camp will feature amenities such as a 700-seat dining facility, a gym, laundry, and medical services, which are expected to reduce hotel expenses for the troops already deployed.
Rising Tensions
This development is also expected to pave the way for more states to contribute troops, highlighting the escalating tension between Republican governors and the federal government over the approach to border security.
Interstate Support
Governor Abbott of Texas has been at the forefront of exploring what roles states can play in enforcing immigration laws.
His efforts have garnered support from fellow Republican governors, including those from Florida and Georgia, who have dispatched their National Guard troops to assist in patrolling the Texas border – a region that has witnessed unprecedented migrant crossings in recent years.
Governors Rally Behind Texas
In a growing conflict with the federal government over illegal immigration, half of the U.S. states, led by Republican governors, have shown their support for Texas.
Still Determined
Despite a recent Supreme Court ruling against Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s use of razor wire along the Mexico border, he remains determined to intensify his efforts against what he describes as an invasion.
GOP Governors Unite
In January, 25 Republican governors issued a joint statement, backing Mr. Abbott’s actions to safeguard Americans from the unprecedented wave of illegal immigrants, the influx of dangerous drugs like fentanyl, and the threat of terrorists entering the country.
The country recently saw a record-breaking influx of over 300,000 illegal migrants.
Abbott Blames Biden
Governor Greg Abbott, appearing on Fox News, criticized the Biden administration for failing to secure the U.S.-Mexico border, declaring that Texas has taken it upon itself to do so.
New Razor Wire Deployment
Abbott has also shared images of the Texas National Guard deploying new razor wire along the river, a move that seemingly doesn’t conflict with the recent Supreme Court ruling, which only addressed the removal of existing wire and did not comment on the installation of new barriers.
Democrats Urge Biden’s Intervention
Democrats are calling for President Biden to adopt a firmer approach towards Texas. Congressman Joaquin Castro, in particular, has criticized Governor Abbott for using the National Guard to disrupt and create ‘chaos’ at the border, advocating for federal oversight of the guardsmen.
Controversial Immigration Tactics
Governor Abbott is also facing legal opposition from the Biden administration regarding his orders to install floating barriers on the Rio Grande and the detention of thousands of migrants on trespassing allegations.
Immigration Politics Heat Up
With the governor continuing to transport migrants to Democratic-led cities and states, there is increasing pressure on President Biden to take significant measures to curb the influx of new arrivals.
