Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Bluntly Says ‘I Don’t Trust You’ to a Fellow Republican on U.S.-Mexico Border Policies

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has publicly criticized a Republican incumbent, focusing on issues like border control, and reiterated his backing for a GOP rival aiming to unseat the state representative.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, Abbott expressed his distrust in State Rep. DeWayne Burns concerning topics such as illegal immigration control “or any issue,” while endorsing Burns’ Republican primary opponent for Texas’ House District 58, Helen Kerwin.

Writing on the same platform, State Rep. DeWayne Burns defended his record on border security, stating that he supported “every piece of the Border Security plan, including the Governor’s initiatives.”

He emphasized that his voting history consistently shows strong support for securing the border.

This statement was a response to a video by the Family Empowerment Coalition PAC, criticizing Texas Republicans like Burns who didn’t back Abbott’s school vouchers proposal. Burns slammed the group for using an “A.I. generated voice” without any sources to label him as “weak” on border immigration control.

In response, Governor Abbott clarified, “To be clear, I don’t trust you on the border or any issue. You misrepresent school choice. You masquerade as a Republican but repeatedly vote with Democrats. You even voted with liberal Democrats to reduce criminal sentences. That’s why I support Kerwin.”

National Headlines on Border Policy

Abbott’s vocal and unwavering stance on enhanced border security, which includes confrontations with the Biden administration and the Supreme Court over razor wire placement and the deployment of a significant number of Texas National Guard troops and state police to the U.S.-Mexico border, has made national headlines.

State Rep. DeWayne Burns was among the 21 Texas Republicans who sided with Democrats to remove the school voucher program from an education bill, effectively derailing a policy Governor Abbott had been advocating for months.

Two other groups, AFC Victory Fund and School Freedom Fund, have joined the effort against these Texas House Republicans who opposed Abbott’s school voucher initiative, by backing their primary opponents and launching attack ads statewide.

Abbott had earlier expressed his plan to challenge these Republicans by supporting their primary rivals in an effort to unseat them.

Continuing his public endorsement of Helen Kerwin, Abbott stated, “Helen is the type of new conservative leader House District 58 needs to ensure an even bigger, better Texas. Please join me in supporting her for State Representative.”

A frequent critic of President Joe Biden’s immigration policies, Abbott highlighted during a press conference in Eagle Pass that these states have “gaping openings” in their border security.

He made these comments while announcing the construction of a “forward base” for the Texas National Guard near the border, suggesting that this military buildup would deter migrants from choosing Texas.

Abbott emphasized, “We want to make sure that when they come to the crossroads [and decide whether] they are going to go to Texas or going to go elsewhere, they will know the wrong place to go is the state of Texas.”
