Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced plans to increase razor wire installation along the Texas-Mexico border, continuing his confrontation with President Joe Biden’s administration on immigration policies.
New Razor Wire Plans
“More National Guard & razor wire barriers are coming to the Texas border,” Abbott declared on X, formerly known as Twitter.
He emphasized, “We’ re-doubling our efforts to expand the areas where we are denying illegal entry into Texas. Illegal immigration is now going down in Texas while increasing in [California] & [Arizona].”
A Controversial Solution
This announcement follows the state’s deployment of razor wire in Shelby Park, a hotspot for illegal crossings from Mexico, as part of Abbott’s broader strategy to discourage illegal entry into the U.S.
Texas Ramps Up
Texas has implemented an intensive measure by installing rows of razor wire in Shelby Park, now a major crossing point for illegal entry into the U.S. from Mexico. This step is one of several robust actions Governor Abbott has taken to prevent illegal crossings.
Border Control or Overreach?
In a bold move earlier this year, Texas took control of Shelby Park and restricted access to Border Patrol agents, intensifying tensions with the Biden administration.
The Justice Department has criticized this approach, arguing that the razor wire hampers border patrol operations and hinders assistance to migrants in distress.
Supreme Court’s Ruling
Despite a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision favoring the Biden administration, allowing Border Patrol agents to alter or remove the wire, more razor wire is being added.
Governor’s Claim on National TV
Governor Abbott recently stated on Fox News’s ‘Sunday Morning Futures’ that the installation of razor wire in a park in Eagle Pass, Texas, has significantly decreased migrant crossings in the area.
‘Massive’ Drop in Migration
The governor highlighted a ‘massive reduction’ in migration flow, citing a drop from thousands to just a few individuals per day in the affected area. This announcement comes amid an ongoing dispute with the Biden administration over border management.
Rallying Support from Governors
Abbott mentioned that several governors are rallying in support of Texas’s ‘right to self-defense’ against the surge of migrants at the U.S. southern border.
“The area where we have occupied this park in Eagle Pass, Texas, that we put up the razor wire, there used to be 3,000 or 4,000 people crossing that area a day,” he added.
Accusation Against Biden
Abbott argued that the state’s actions prove border security is achievable and criticized President Biden for hindering their efforts. “If we put up resistance, we show that we can secure the border. Joe Biden should not be stopping that,” he claimed.
Texas’ Right to Act
Texas initiated the installation of razor wire along its border with Mexico last year, a move that has been contested by the Biden administration, which argues Texas lacks the authority for such an action.
Texas has steadfastly continued this practice, citing its right to defend itself against a surge of migrants.
Eagle Pass Conflict
Tensions escalated recently when Texas cordoned off a public park in Eagle Pass and installed razor wire without informing local officials. Additionally, Texas law enforcement barred U.S. Border Patrol officers from accessing the park, which includes a crucial boat ramp.
Abbott Declares ‘Invasion’
Governor Abbott reinforced his stance last month, claiming an ‘invasion’ and criticizing President Biden for insufficient border security efforts.
Governors Unite
His position has garnered support from many Republican governors, emphasizing a constitutional ‘right of self-defense’ in the face of ‘imminent harm or invasion,’ as Abbott stated on Sunday.
A Multi-State Effort
Since 2021, over a dozen Republican governors have dispatched their state National Guard units to the U.S.-Mexico border.
Governor Joins Texas
Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb recently joined this initiative, citing concerns over national and economic security due to federal inaction on immigration law enforcement and border security.
Indiana Steps Up
In a post on X on Friday, Governor Holcomb announced the deployment of the Indiana National Guard to Texas, emphasizing the impact on states like Indiana.
Asylum System Reform
His decision comes in the wake of a collapsed border security deal, which would have reformed the asylum system for faster and more stringent immigration enforcement.
