The convoy, which was organized by a group called “Take Our Border Back” and which one organizer called “God’s army,” is heading to Texas in an attempt to stop migrants from entering the US. However, problems that began before the group set off have only continued, leaving the convoy’s future uncertain.
Poor start
According to WIRED magazine, an organizer called Craig Hudgins claimed that “40,000 truckers from all over the country and Canada” would join the convoy. However, only about 20 vehicles actually turned up at the meeting point.
Setting the tone
The starting point, a parking lot in Norfolk, Virginia, wasn’t the group’s first choice of location. The owners of the original meeting point canceled at the last minute, sparking a last-minute rush to find somewhere else.
Setting off
The original starting time came and went without any action. The smaller-than-expected group set off about an hour behind schedule.
Off the beaten track
According to WIRED, one of the vehicles quickly became lost. Later, participants fought over where they would spend the night.
Tensions rise
At one point, WIRED reported, one of the vehicles in the convoy stopped on the side of the highway and threw a man out. He was left on the side of the road without his wallet.
Original goal
The group has stated that it intends to stop unauthorized migrants from entering the US. However, it has yet to explain how it plans to do that.
Size discrepancy
In December, around 300,000 individuals attempted to enter the US through the border with Mexico. In the first half of January, migrant encounters decreased by half, according to Border Patrol.
Big money
According to Business Insider, Take Our Border Back raised almost $140,000 in donations to support its mission. The money would be used on gas, city permits, location expenses, communication equipment, and other materials, according to the group’s fundraising page.
Spreading the message
The group has an audience of thousands subscribed to its Telegram channel and has posted updates on Rumble and X. It has also livestreamed parts of the journey.
Facing opposition
According to one participant, four cars in the convoy had their tires slashed overnight outside a hotel where members of the convoy were staying. “There have been recent social media posts encouraging folks to egg and disrupt the convoy at its many rallying point locations,” the participant alleged.
Wrong mission
“If this were really ‘God’s army,’” another user responded, “they would be delivering truckloads of relief supplies to alleviate the suffering of migrants who have lost everything they had due to criminal and political violence in their home countries as well as the ravages of climate change.”
