Russian broadcasters critique Trump supporters as “not very smart primitive people” on national TV

Russian state control television on Friday aired disparaging remarks about Former President Donald Trump’s supporters, calling them “not very smart primitive people.”

The statements emerged on NTV’s “Meeting Point,” a show within the network’s primetime lineup owned by energy giant Gazprom.

Donald Trump continues to lead as the preferred candidate for the Republican party’s presidential nomination for the 2024 election.

A clip from the broadcast, translated into English and posted by Ron Filipkowski, editor-in-chief of Meidas Touch on X, has garnered over 913,000 views.

Trump Supporters, not Smart

Maxim Yusin, a Russian journalist, expressed on the show, “The majority of people who vote for Trump are not very smart primitive people with whom you need to talk like this, with cliches and dumb slogans.”

“Rednecks”

The comment elicited laughter from other panel members, with one likening Trump supporters to “rednecks” and drawing a comparison to villagers clamoring for money. The panel also critiqued Trump’s repetitive speech style at rallies. 

“Same 10 Words”

A third commentator chimes in, stating, “He shuffles around the same 10 words, such a b******, that’s all… This man is planning to be president again.” This comment elicits laughter from other panel members.

Aid for Ukraine

Yusin proceeds to suggest that this is Trump’s preferred mode of communication, emphasizing that Ukraine should receive no military aid from the United States.

Senate Aid Bill

On Tuesday, the Senate passed a $95 billion foreign aid package, which includes an extra $60 billion in military assistance earmarked for Ukraine.

House Approval Pending

Before President Biden can sign it into law, the legislation must also receive approval from the House of Representatives. However, Republican Speaker Mike Johnson has yet to confirm whether he will bring the bill to a vote.

Russia Ukraine War

Ukraine and Russia have been engaged in a full-scale conflict since February 2022. So far, Western powers have provided Ukraine with substantial financial and military aid.

Troops Removal

The Ukrainian military announced on Saturday that it had pulled back its troops from Avdiivka in the Donbas region, a city under siege by Russian forces for months. 

Largest Territorial Acquisition

The withdrawal was made to minimize casualties. Avdiivka’s fall marks Russia’s largest territorial acquisition since taking control of Bakhmut in May 2023.

Russian Pundit Supports Trump

In 2022, Igor Korotchenko, a pundit and editor-in-chief of National Defense on Russian state television, urged Russians and their government to openly declare their political support for Donald Trump. 

GOP’s Leniant Stance

This statement was made after Trump and his faction within the GOP had adopted a more lenient stance towards Moscow amidst the invasion of Ukraine.

“We should support Trump”

“We should support Trump and not be shy about it,” he Korotchenko. “We should support U.S. politicians, like Trump, and other healthy conservative European powers who advocate for the normalisation of relations between Russia and the West.”

No Fan

Ironically, during Trump’s tenure in the White House, Korotchenko was not his staunchest supporter. 

“Inferiority Complex”

In 2019, he went as far as suggesting that Trump harbored an “inferiority complex” towards eastern powers such as China and Russia, which frequently exhibit military strength through parades and other displays.
