Reporter Warns Trump Takeover of RNC Could Cause Chaos

On Friday, The New Republic released an interview with Marc Caputo, who released an extensive account of Trump’s machinations against RNC chair Ronna McDaniel this week. Caputo warned that Trump’s actions could cause tensions to flare among Republican leadership.

End of the line

“Ronna McDaniel performed a near-impossible feat in politics for the past seven years,” Caputo wrote in his report. She kept “both the Republican National Committee and Donald Trump happy while she was chair. Those days are over.”

Trump has called for a complete takeover of the RNC, formally endorsing loyalists for key positions like chief financial officer and chair. He wants his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, to replace McDaniel as chair.

Dysfunctional relationship

Trump’s team and the RNC have butted heads numerous times since 2016. At one point during the 2020 campaign, Caputo wrote, Trump’s campaign manager and McDaniel refused to talk to each other.

Long time coming

“We cut the oxygen off to her, the small-dollar donors, because she advanced the primary debates the way she did that was just anti-Trump,” Steve Bannon told Caputo. Bannon said that he and other far-right MAGA supporters “bludgeoned her relentlessly.”

Impossible situation

“Ronna was in a no-win situation,” one anonymous source told Caputo. “It was a wonder she held on this long. Perhaps she held on too long.”

Difficult game

“No one lasts in Trump’s Game of Thrones,” one source told Caputo, “but Ronna might have played it better than anyone.”

Tensions rise

“There are too many people in that RNC building in Washington that think they call the shots. They don’t,” one former RNC adviser told Caputo. “This is Trump’s party and Trump is taking this back to the way it used to be: the nominee is in complete control, and his people are running the show.”

Seeking assistance

According to Caputo, Trump’s team is desperate to have the RNC under its control in order to leverage its spending powers. Others, however, resent the dominance Trump has over the Party.

“Ronna held her own and didn’t back down. She gave as good as she got,” one insider told Caputo. “The fact is, Republicans who want to blame Ronna for all these problems are refusing to admit the reality: This is a lot more about Trump than it is about the chair.”

Taking over

According to Caputo, Trump became increasingly annoyed at the independence of the RNC under McDaniel. He wanted it to be entirely focused on defending him and supporting his presidential campaign.

Desperate for cash

Caputo warned on The New Republic’s podcast that Trump might seek to use the RNC to pay some of his hefty legal bills. That would come at the expense of other Republican candidates in tight races.

Siphoning off resources

“There’s concern that that could happen,” Caputo explained, “and this could drain party resources.” “You think?” TNR’s Greg Sargent replied sarcastically.

Hole in the bucket

“Four criminal cases is a lot,” Sargent elaborated. “The number of witnesses in the January 6th case and the documents case, that’s just time-consuming.… When you talk about lawyers, time is money.”

Deep fear

“Republicans, by and large, are very scared of bucking Donald Trump and/or his voters,” Caputo explained. “If you’re a politician and you want to get reelected, you don’t want to get crosswise with your voters. And those who do usually end up losing.”
