Detroit News reporter Craig Mauger confronted Meshawn Maddock, ex-co-chair of the Michigan Republican Party after she criticized his reporting by labeling it as “fake news.”
Reported Plot Details
Mauger’s investigation revealed a scheme allegedly orchestrated by the Trump campaign to keep the former president in power. The plot involved sending fake elector slates to Congress on January 6, 2021.
Maddock’s Defense
Maddock vehemently criticized Mauger’s reporting and maintained that both she and the other indicted fake Trump electors genuinely believed in Trump’s victory in the election.
She asserted they were merely serving as backup electors, ready to step in if the courts decided to overturn President Joe Biden’s election win.
Skepticism from Mauger
Mauger questioned Maddock’s narrative, highlighting that the Michigan electors had signed documents affirming themselves as legitimate electors and these documents were officially sent to the National Archives.
Maddock’s Response to Mauger’s Report
Maddock, in response to Mauger’s report, posted on X (formerly Twitter), “The fake news just keeps regurgitating the same old stories and pretends it’s something new.”
“Trump Won MI and Other States”
She added, “Millions of people clearly believed that proof of cheating would eventually reveal that Trump won MI and other states. We weren’t quiet about it.”
Mauger’s Query Regarding Maddock’s Claims
Mauger, in reply, questioned, “Hey Meshawn, I read your thread about what you believed on December 14, 2020. Did you believe you were in the state Capitol when you signed the certificate? Did you know the certificate was going to be sent to Mike Pence and the National Archives? Simple questions.”
Seeking Further Clarifications
Mauger further asked, “Also, can you share what Shawn Flynn told the 16 Republicans inside party headquarters? What other members of the Trump campaign were there, if any? None of the individuals present have shared that publicly. Lots of conflicting information out there.”
Maddock and 16 Others Charged with Eight Felonies
Maddock, along with 16 others, faces eight felony charges for their alleged roles in attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Accused of Sending Fake Document
They are accused of sending a fake document alleging that former President Donald Trump had won the state’s presidential race despite losing over 150,000 votes.
AG Nessel’s Accusation
In July, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said, “We allege that 16 Michigan residents met covertly in the basement of Michigan GOP headquarters and knowingly, of their own volition, signed statements that they were the duly elected and qualified electors for the president and vice president of the United States of America. That was a lie.”
An Attempt to Hide the Plot
The indictment in the false electors case also alleges that Maddock and 15 others intentionally operated covertly to hide their scheme.
Security Measures at Michigan GOP Headquarters
According to the document, two Michigan GOP staffers were stationed at the entrance of the party’s headquarters in Lansing to prevent anyone from entering. These staffers reported that they refused entry to Maddock’s husband, Michigan State Representative Matt Maddock, and a film crew.
“Dems waiting for my Arrest”
In May, Maddock bragged on X about how Democrats wanted her arrested but that she was still waiting.
She wrote, “Dems waiting for my arrest,” alongside a GIF of a skeleton tapping its fingers on a table with the caption “WAITING.”
Maddock Denies Wrongdoing
Maddock has entered a not-guilty plea to the charges and asserted that neither she nor the others facing charges engaged in any wrongdoing. She also stressed that the group’s meeting in 2020 was entirely open and lacked secrecy.
