David Hogg, a Parkland shooting survivor, acquired a domain related to Donald Trump’s new sneaker line, redirecting it to a platform advocating against gun violence.
Announcement on X
Hogg, currently president of Leaders We Deserve, an organization committed to electing young candidates to Congress, revealed the announcement on X, formerly Twitter, on Friday.
“Call for Gun Safety”
Hogg wrote, “I just bought shoptrumpsneakers.com. I have redirected you to a page to call your member of Congress. The twist is the person who makes the call is a victim of gun violence whose voice has been re-created with AI to call for gun safety.”
Trump’s actual site is gettrumpsneakers.com.
Stricter Gun Laws
Visitors to Hogg’s site are automatically redirected to theshotline.org, an anti-gun violence website that simulates calls from gun violence victims to lawmakers. The goal is to influence legislation for stricter gun laws.
Mimicking Trump
The initiative mimics some of the high-top styles associated with former President Donald Trump following the release of his own line of sneakers.
Saving America
“Brilliant!” was the reply to the post by @FoodieEccentric, which read, “Your generation will save America.”
Sneaker Cost
Trump’s sneaker collection, priced between $199 and $399, is designed to support his legal battles.
Never Surrender
The pricier shoe, dubbed “The Never Surrender High-Tops,” featuring gold-colored sneakers with a black T logo on the tongue, has completely sold out.
Not Designed by Trump
The former president’s website disclaimer reads: “Trump Sneakers are not designed, manufactured, distributed or sold by Donald J. Trump, The Trump Organization or any of their respective affiliates or principals.”
Nothing to do with Politics
It adds, “GetTrumpSneakers.com is not political and has nothing to do with any political campaign.”
High Demand
According to Trump’s Truth Social page, some purchasers are now trying to resell them for thousands of dollars.
Legal Troubles & Marketing Efforts
The ex-president commenced promoting the shoes on Sunday at Sneaker Con, a footwear convention in Philadelphia, shortly after a judge in a New York civil fraud case directed him to pay $350 million for his involvement in manipulating his net worth.
$83.3 million Defamation Fine
Previously, he was also instructed to pay $83.3 million to E Jean Carroll for defaming her through false statements regarding his alleged sexual assault against her in the 1990s.
Trump has not publicly commented on Hogg’s site but has continued promoting the sneakers.
Proud of This
Following the site’s launch, the anti-gun violence activist later expressed, “Not going to lie, pretty proud of this. Thanks to my tech-savvy friends who helped.”
Impact and Outreach
The website has facilitated over 65,000 calls since its launch and highlights the narratives of six gun violence victims, enabling visitors to amplify their voices through legislative advocacy.
Number of Deaths
The website reports that over 43,000 gun violence deaths occurred in 2023, with nearly 5,000 deaths recorded so far this year.
Parkland Shooting
Hogg was a student in February 2018 when a former student entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and fatally shot 17 people while injuring 17 others.
March for Our Lives
Following this event, Hogg emerged as an anti-gun violence activist and co-founded March for Our Lives, a student-led organization dedicated to advocating for gun control legislation.
