Referring to statistics from the Chicago Police Department that revealed a 17% surge in overall violent crime from the prior year, interviewer Poppy Harlow raised a crucial question to Mayor Johnson: “Are Chicagoans going to be safer in 2024?”

In the initial eight months of 2023, Chicago residents filed reports of an overall 13% increase in crime compared to the same period from January to August of 2022, with theft, assault, battery, robbery, and motor vehicle theft cases all showing an upward trend.

In response to the city’s safety outlook for the new year, the Democratic Mayor laid out his vision for an extensive government initiative and branded it as a “full-out community safety plan.”

Johnson’s goal was not only to tackle the underlying factors of increased crime rates in Chicago but also to make crucial financial commitments.

Millions Allocated for City Safety

As the mayor of the city controlled by Democrats for approximately seven months, Johnson detailed the investments as follows:

“A quarter of a billion dollars to address homelessness, $100 million for violence prevention. We added 80 million more dollars to our youth employment program of which we hired 25,000 young people just this summer. That’s a 20% increase from the previous year.”

Johnson also addressed his strategy to boost youth employment as a means of reducing the likelihood of young individuals turning to crime life. He stated, “We added $80 million more to our youth employment program, of which we hired 25,000 young people just this summer, that’s a 20 percent increase from the previous year.”

The 47-year-old mayor revealed his intention to bring on board an extra 4,000 young individuals this upcoming summer. Simultaneously, he introduced the establishment of a dedicated office to support the re-entry of individuals returning to the community following their incarceration.

He emphasized, “We have stood up an entire office dedicated to re-entry. So individuals who are returning to our communities who have been incarcerated because of failed policies will have a welcoming space for them.”

Reparations and Restoration

During a key part of the interview, Johnson asserted that reparations are crucial for effectively putting an end to the state’s soaring violence, explaining “I’ve added a half a million dollars for restoration and reparations to address, again, the cycle of violence, which looks like school closings, closing of mental health facilities, of which I’ve invested in now. We’re going to open up two mental health clinics that were closed from two previous administrations ago.”

“This guy makes Lightfoot look good”

Although the mayor is certain about the success of his plan to end the crime cycle, his approach has sparked a wave of criticism on social media. A skeptic mockingly remarked on X (formerly Twitter), “He has made Lori Lightfoot look like a genius,” while another agreed, “This guy makes Lightfoot look good, and that’s saying a lot, we all know how bad she was.”

Crime rates in Chicago surged dramatically during Lori Lightfoot’s tenure, escalating from 46,572 total incidents to 65,421. This spike was primarily fueled by significant rises in car theft, burglary, and robbery.

Vehicle thefts saw the sharpest rise in Chicago’s crime statistics, skyrocketing 38% this year and a whopping 227% from 2019.

Who’s Fault Is Chicago’s Crime Rise?

Johnson acknowledged that while “homicides are down” and “shootings are down,” the rise in crime was a challenge faced by all major American cities. Could this perhaps suggest the rise in crime in Chicago is not entirely the government’s fault?
